March 6 Cabinet Meeting Summary

1. Members discussed the planning for the FY 2019 operating budget.

2. Members agreed to award a contract to ISES Corp. for performing a facilities condition assessment. The information will help the College guide priorities for the repair, upgrade, and replacement of building systems as well as create accurate facility budgets.

3. Members approved the hiring of an athletics replacement position (head men’s soccer coach).

Student Office Hours…an opportunity for current students to meet with the Provost. Stop by to share feedback, ask questions or enjoy a conversation with Provost Brenda Kelly. All meetings will take place in the Provost’s Office on the main floor of the Carlson Administration Building. The following dates and times are available as walk-in meetings on a first-come, first-served basis. No appointment necessary. Meetings can be with individual students or with groups of up to three students. To accommodate as many students as possible, each student or group will have about a 15-minute visit.

What You Should Know About Social Security...Rhonda Whiteneck, Public Affairs Specialist with the Social Security Administration will present a comprehensive look at Social Security benefits and the role they play in retirement. The presentation will include a look at how your age at retirement affects your benefits, who else is eligible to receive a benefit, and how you enroll. In addition, Rhonda will discuss Medicare Parts A, B, C and D, touching on penalties, creditable drug coverage and how Medicare affects HSA participation. Are you over the age of 40? Are you unsure how your and your spouse’s Medicare benefits coordinate? Do you have parents who will be retiring and could use a few pointers? Do you have an HSA and wonder what will happen to it when you reach Medicare eligibility age? If you answered yes to any of these, this seminar is for you. This is an excellent presentation you don’t want to miss. There will be two sessions held to accommodate employees, both on Wednesday, March 14; please sign up:

Faculty Award Nominations…Each academic year, Gustavus recognizes the contributions faculty make to the life of the institution. Faculty, staff, and students are invited to nominate faculty for the awards listed below. Award nominations are due on April 15, 2018; nominate online.

  • Edgar M. Carlson Award for Distinguished Teaching: This award is the highest honor granted to a member of the Gustavus faculty. It represents a broadly-shared desire to celebrate one teacher in each academic year who has demonstrated truly outstanding effort, accomplishment, and dedicated service to Gustavus students’ best educational interests.
  • Provost's Award for Teaching Excellence to a Non-Tenure-Track Faculty Member: This award recognizes a Gustavus non-tenure-track faculty member for significant contributions to teaching and learning.
  • Gustavus Faculty Scholarly Accomplishment Award: This award is intended to be the highest accolade a Gustavus faculty member can receive for distinguished scholarly achievements.
  • Gustavus Faculty Service Award: This award is intended to be the highest accolade a Gustavus faculty member can receive for distinguished service activities.
  • Mansergh Faculty Scientific Research Award: This award is intended to recognize outstanding peer-reviewed publications that contribute to the scholarly achievement and reputation of the faculty and the College.

IRS Announces Change to 2018 Family HSA Contribution Limit...Due to changes made in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (2017 tax reform), certain adjustments needed to be made to inflation amounts. One of those adjustments is to the annual family contribution for HSA accounts in 2018. The family max contribution is decreased from $6,900 to $6,850. The single contribution limit remains unchanged at $3,450. Please contact Nicole Goebel to make any necessary changes to your annual HSA contribution.

Campus Happenings

Ally Training...This semester we are launching a brand new Diversity Center-sponsored program called Ally Training. We aim to provide the Gustavus community with resources and education on how to be an informed, supportive, and proactive ally to the queer community via a 3-hour interactive workshop. This workshop will cover a variety of topics including terminology and what do do when someone comes out to you. Our first workshop will be from 12:30-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 10 in Beck 101.

at 2:30-5:30 p.m. on Friday, April 13, at 12:30-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 21, and at 12:30-3:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 12. If you have any questions about the workshop please feel free to contact either Andie Kukacka or Amanda Landaverde.

Retreats...The Office of Church Relations will host a weekend confirmation retreat for Jackson Lake Lutheran of Amboy, Minnesota from Friday, March 9 to Saturday, March. 10. The retreat program is a resource offered to ELCA congregations that are also members of the Gustavus Association of Congregations.

Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Saint Peter Tornado...Twist of Fate: Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Saint Peter Tornado is happening from 5:15-6:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 29 at the Saint Peter High School Theater. This is a time for reflection as we commemorate the 1998 tornado. The program will honor the losses, while also celebrating the resiliency of the community over the last 20 years turning this tragedy to opportunity and expressing gratitude for the heroic efforts of the community to build a stronger Saint Peter. The program will feature veteran WCCO news anchor, Don Shelby, as emcee. More information is available online.
 
Bingo for Scholars...From 4-6 p.m. on Saturday, March 24 at the Redmen Club (412 S 3rd Street in Saint Peter), there will be a bingo for scholars event. The money raised will help Saint Peter-Kasota Dollars for Scholars receive a matching grant from Scholarship America to establish funds for renewable scholarships that students will apply for after completing one year of post-secondary education. Help support SPHS grads continue their education.
 
Saint Peter Choral Society and Orchestra presents Mozart Requiem...On 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, the Catholic Church of Saint Peter will be hosting the performance, Mozart Requiem. Tickets are $12 in advance at Swedish Kontur, $15 at the door. Student tickets are free of charge. Several Gustavus faculty and students will be participating - soloists Michael Jorgensen and Gustavus graduates Roy Heilman, Naomi Karstad, and Katha Chamberlain. Chorus members include professors Ron Rietz, John Holte and Hayden Duncan, and three winners of the SPCS Choral Scholarships: Emma Johnson, Liza Johnson and Micaela Chesnut. Orchestral players include concertmistress and Gustavus graduate Lara MacLean, Ann Pesavento (bassoon), Jonathan Brandt (trumpet), Jonathan Hickox-Young (timpani), and David Fienen (organ soloist). The concert will be repeated on Sunday, March 18 at 3 p.m. in the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, New Ulm as the final concert in the J.F. Nordlie Pipe Organ Restoration Dedicatory Recitals Series.
