Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education Rankings... Gustavus ranks 144th among colleges and universities across the United States and third among Minnesota private colleges in the first-ever Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education (WSJ/THE) College Rankings.
Tuition Benefits Explained... Kirk Carlson and Richard Aune will provide information about admission, tuition benefit, and tuition exchange options, Thursday, Oct. 13, from 12 to 1 p.m. in the Dive. There will be a short presentation with time for questions after. Feel free to bring your lunch. All employees with current high school juniors or seniors are encouraged to attend. Nominations Sought... The Eric Norelius Award has been created to annually recognize an administrative employee who has demonstrated exceptional service and dedication to Gustavus Adolphus College. The award was named in honor of Eric Norelius, who was the founder and first teacher of the school that became Gustavus Adolphus College. Norelius exemplifies the vision, dedication, and service emulated by the administrative staff.
The Augusta Carlson Schultz award has been created to annually recognize a support staff employee who has demonstrated exceptional service and dedication to Gustavus Adolphus College. The award is named in honor of Augusta Carlson Schultz, who exemplifies the dedication and spirit of service that has been characteristic of the many support staff who have served Gustavus and continue to contribute to the success of the College. In the late 1800s, 16-year-old Augusta Carlson Schultz became one of the first and youngest employees of the Gustavus Dining Service.

In-Service Opportunity... Learn 2 Live will provide an in-service for faculty and staff to provide resources to help support students. Save the date for October 17 in the Board Room. There will be two afternoon sessions offered. Details to follow in an email/invite soon.
Announcement from Facilities Management... Hello Walk will be closed through October 16 to resolve water ponding issues between Anderson Hall and the Heating Plant and to address site re-grading of the Anderson Hall building. Pedestrians are asked to find alternative routes during this time, especially pedestrians traveling to/from Pittman, Sohre, and Confer/Vickner. Campus Happenings
Flu Shots... Flu Shot Clinics will be held October 6 and October 12 from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. in the Heritage Banquet Room. We accept insurance cards (please bring your card or a copy). Unfortunately we cannot accept Medicare. Same day cash price of $30 is also an option.
Immigration Then and Now... Award-winning author and University of Minnesota professor Erika Lee will be on campus next Thursday, October 13, at 7 p.m. to give a free, public lecture on the first global “immigration crisis of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.” Held in Alumni Hall, Lee's lecture will examine the Asian immigration “crisis” of a century ago, when changing population patterns sparked international debates, race riots, and restrictive immigration laws around the world, and will connect the global history of Asian exclusion to current debates about immigration.
Arboretum Fall Fest... Join us this Saturday, October 8, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for Fall Fest in the Arboretum. Enjoy a fun-filled day on the beautiful grounds of Linnaeus Arboretum including a treasure hunt, games, craft, hayrides, face painting, live music, and food concessions. Alpacas and border collies will return from 1-3 p.m. Music will be provided by a jazz combo, the Gustavus Jazztet at 11:30 a.m., G Sharp acapella group at noon, and a Magic Show with Doug at 2 p.m.
Family Weekend... Students' families will be on campus Friday through Sunday for the annual family weekend! For a full schedule of events, please see the family weekend schedule online.

Congregational Outreach
Retreats...The Office of Church Relations will host one weekend confirmation retreat for Shepard of the Hills Lutheran Church of Shoreview from Friday, October 7 to Saturday, October 8. We will also be hosting two day retreats one for First English Lutheran Church of Faribault on Saturday, October 8 and one for First Lutheran Church of Le Sueur on Saturday, October 8. The retreat program is a resource offered to ELCA congregations that are also members of the Gustavus Association of Congregations.
Exploring Religious Questions Series: "Freedom, Human Rights, and the Common Good: Contemporary Political Debates and Diverse Christian Responses." This mini course continues on Monday, October 10 (7-9 p.m., Olin Hall 103), in the second session with a discussion led by Dr. Michael J. Chan (Assistant Professor of Old Testament at Luther Seminary) about "The Right to Bear Arms: Gun Shows, Gun Safety, and the Bible." The mini course is co-sponsored by The Office of Church Relations and the Bernhardson Distinguished Chair of Lutheran Studies.

Inside Gustavus is a newsletter for Gustavus Adolphus College employees produced by the Office of Marketing and Communication. It is published weekly during the academic year (except during the week of Thanksgiving, the Christmas break, Touring Week, and the Spring and Easter breaks). Anyone may submit items by filling out an online submission form. While online submissions are preferred, items may also be submitted typewritten on a letter-sized sheet of paper. Send "snail mail" items to: Inside Gustavus, Office of Marketing and Communication. Items must reach the office no later than 4:30 p.m. on the Tuesday before publication.
