Faculty/Staff Activities

Sarah Wolter published "A critical discourse analysis of espnW: Divergent dialogues and postfeminist conceptions of female fans and female athletes" in the International Journal of Sport Communication, volume 8, issue 3. Her article was also featured in the journal's "from the editor" segment.

Kathi Tunheim, Economics and Management, co-chaired with Provost Susan Hasseler, Augustana-Sioux Falls, the first-ever gathering of “Women in Leadership in Lutheran Higher Education” at the 2015 Vocation of a Lutheran College Conference at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, July 20-22. Kathi also presented a paper, “Lessons Learned from the Experiences of U.S. Women College Presidents.”

Kathleen Keller, History, published a review of the book Nouvelle histoire des colonisations européennes (XIXe-XXe siècles) Sociétés, cultures, politiques edited by Amaury Lorin and Christelle Taraud in H-France review, an online venue for reviews published by French Historical Studies. The review appears in the September 2015 issue of H-France Review.

María Isabel Kalbermatten (MLC) had her article "Marcas e indicadores de la ironía en conversaciones entre familiares y amigos de Santa Fe (Argentina)” published in ALFAL. 50 ANOS. Contribuções para os estudos linguísticos e filológicos, a book published in Brazil, dedicated to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the ALFAL (Asociación de Lingüística y Fillología de América Latina).

Kalbermatten also delivered a paper titled “The use of intensifiers as markers of irony in informal conversation,” at the CILIR2015, XVe Colloque International de Linguistique Ibéro-romane, that was held June 3-5, 2015 in Rouen, France. She also delivered a paper titled “Argentina’s Socioeconomic Situation Through the Lens of Tabare’s Diógenes y el Linyera,” at the 2015 International Humor Conference of ISHS, that was held June 29-July 3, 2015 in Oakland, California.

Works from "Making Mona Lisa" by Priscilla Briggs are included in the exhibition "Photography Since the Millennium" at the Carnegie Center for Art and History in New Albany, IN. The exhibition opens to the public October 16, 2015.

President's Cabinet Summary 

1.  Technology Services Director Bruce Aarsvold and Associate Director of Core Services Jessie Twaddle reviewed the GTS summer projects and the new CrashPlan PROe backup service.  All employees will be encouraged to utilize this new backup service.

2. Director of Institutional Research David Menk was present to review the U.S. News & World Report college rankings.  Cabinet members were encouraged to continue this conversation with their respective staffs to engage them in determining ways that their work helps move the College forward.

3.  A brief discussion was held regarding the 2015-2016 budget and the importance of student retention.

4.  Members approved the hiring of two full-time replacement Advancement positions (Administrative Assistant in Alumni and Parent Engagement and Director of the Annual Fund).

A reminder that employees need to watch the video before doing the survey. Skipping the video and just doing the survey does not provide the federally mandated training.

All Gustavus employees are expected to have completed either the on-line or in-person version of the 2015-2016 Title IX training by October 2, 2015.

Save the Date...All members of the Gustavus community are invited to attend the All-Campus Strategic Action Conference to discuss a draft action plan outline and questions posed by the Strategic Action Team (SAT). This planning conference is scheduled for Friday, September 25, 2015 at 2:30-4:30 p.m. in Lund.

Nobel Conference 51 Campus Preview...Peg O'Connor, 2015 Nobel Conference Chair and Professor of Philosophy and Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies will provide a glimpse into the topic of addition and this year’s Nobel Conference on Friday, September 18 from 3-4 p.m. in Alumni Hall.  Come and start thinking about the complex topic of addiction and learn a bit more about the upcoming Nobel Conference “Addiction: Exploring the Science and Experience of an Equal Opportunity Condition.”

Homecoming Week...Saturday morning is the beginning of the one week countdown to the Great Gustie Gathering on Saturday, Sept. 26.  Throughout the week the Campus Activities Office and Campus Activities Board will be hosting events for students.

  • KEYC covered the Gustavus football team's 49-0 win over Lake Forest College on Sept. 12.
  •  SouthernMinn.com highlighted the walking play, "Nature," which is being presented in Linnaeus Arboretum four times over Homecoming Weekend.
  • Gustavus Alumnae Laura Whittaker '06 and Jamie MacFarlane '03 were named to the Duluth News Tribune's "20 Under 40" list.
  • Gustavus was also featured in a graphic on the front page of the Washington Post discussing the new College Scorecard released by the U.S. Deptartment of Education on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Inside Gustavus is a newsletter for Gustavus Adolphus College employees produced by the Office of Marketing and Communication.
