Faculty/Staff Activities
Mike Ferragamo (Biology, Psychology, Neuroscience) delivered a presentation during a session on laboratory innovations at the Faculty for Neuroscience Education meeting jointly hosted by Cornell University and Ithaca College. The presentation, done in collaboration with Jan Wotton (Psychology, Neuroscience), described a set of physiological and behavioral projects with different strains of mutant mice that provide opportunities for students to identify unkown phenotypes in a course laboratory. Results collected and analyzed by a number of Gustavus students enrolled in our neuroscience course were featured prominently.
Mary R. McHugh (Classics) delivered a paper entitled "Modern Palermitan Markets and Street Food in the ancient Roman world" at the 2014 Oxford Symposium on Food & Cookery at St. Catz, Oxford, England on July 13, 2014. Her paper will be published in the proceedings of the conference.
Paula O'Loughlin was named to the steering committee for CFD, (the Consortium for Faculty Diversity at Liberal Arts Colleges) this past summer. CFD is an organization of 40 plus national liberal arts colleges committed to increasing diversity in the faculty ranks throughout higher education and at liberal arts colleges in particular.
Assistant Professor of English Sun Hee Lee and Associate Provost Paula O'Loughlin facilitated a workshop on "Dual Career Couples in the Job Search" at the national meeting of the Consortium for Faculty Diversity at Liberal Arts Colleges in St Paul on Saturday, September 20.
Student Achievements
Gustavus football player Mitch Hendricks was named the MIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after going 31-of-43 for 443 yards and four touchdown passes in a 48-19 victory over Hamline on Saturday, Sept. 20. The 443 yards passing broke a school record for passing yards in a game, as the previous record was set by Dean Kraus '89, who threw for 403 yards in a 1985 game against Bethel.

Vice President for Enrollment Management Tom Crady was quoted in an MPR story on Thursday, Sept. 25 about families' reluctance to take out student loans.

The St. Peter Herald posted stories online about the Nobel Conference and the inauguration events on Friday, Sept. 19. A story about the inauguration events also appeared in the paper's print edition on Thursday, Sept. 25.
- The Mankato Free Press printed a story about the football team’s 48-19 victory over Hamline in its Sunday, Sept. 21 edition. Head coach Peter Haugen and student-athletes Mitch Hendricks and Matt Boyce were quoted in the story.
- The Gustavus football team’s 48-19 victory over Hamline also appeared in the Star Tribune’s MIAC Roundup on Sunday, Sept. 21.

Tuition Benefit Meeting...Kirk Carlson and Richard Aune will present information about admission, tuition benefit and exchange options for employee dependents on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 11:30 a.m. in the Board Room. Please feel free to bring your lunch and join the conversation.
Coca-Cola Educational Partnership Funding...Application materials for the $20,000 annual Coca-Cola educational/sustainability/health grant funds are now available. Funding is available for projects initiated by departments, programs, campus-wide initiatives or advocacy groups that focus on enhancing sustainability and community health. Priority will be given to student-focused initiatives achieving the greatest impact on community well-being, broadly understood. While the highest priority will be accorded to campus initiatives, the committee will also consider projects involving Gustavus students in partnership with the surrounding communities. Eligible applicants include existing student groups whose staff or faculty advisors agree to provide project oversight;classes and their instructors; individual students working with faculty or staff supervision. Other categories of participants, representing a variety of campus initiatives, may be eligible; check with the committee. Detailed funding materials including application information, grant categories, budget forms, and submission-reporting contact information can be found online.
Nominations Sought for Outstanding Employee Awards...Nomination forms for the Augusta Carlson Schultz (outstanding support staff employee) and the Eric Norelius (outstanding administrative employee) awards are now available. Any member of the Gustavus community may nominate a regular support staff employee and an administrative staff employee for these awards. The President will present the awards on Founder's Day, Oct. 31, at 10 a.m. in Christ Chapel. You can download the nomination forms off the Human Resources website.
Gustie Recognition Postcards...Have you recently noticed that someone in the Gustavus community is doing great things? Maybe someone went out of their way to help you with a project and you want to thank them. The Office of Marketing and Communication has several different postcards designed to send to people within the community to express your thanks and appreciation for their work. Flu Shot Clinic...The flu shot clinic that was scheduled for Sept. 23 was cancelled because there has been a delay in the vaccine arriving on campus. The flu shot clinic scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 1 is still on as scheduled. Please watch the Gustavus Calendar for updates.

Faculty Meeting...The regular monthly meeting of the faculty is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 in Alumni Hall.
CIRCULATE...The Gustavus Artist Series brings one of the most popular of the 2014 Minnesota Fringe Festival performances to the Gustavus campus for a one-night only event. CIRCULATE shines a spotlight on how we create and relate to news media. Guittar Productions devises dance/comedy/physical theater hybrids, hailed by critics as "a raucously comedic experience", "magic from the mundane", and "an exuberant and entertaining mixture...great energy from a young company". The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28 in Bjorling Recital Hall. No ticket is required.
Shared Covernance Open Meeting...Last May, a draft statement of principles was circulated for comment by the joint Board/Faculty/Administration Working Group on Shared Governance. Before the Working Group finalizes that statement for adoption by the Faculty and Board and reporting to the Higher Learning Commission, it invites all members of the community to join us for discussion and feedback. We invite you to an open meeting to be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 in the Heritage Room. The proposed statement of principles can be found online. If you are unable to attend the open meeting, your comments are still welcome. Please address them to the Working Group through faculty members Max Hailperin, Paul Saulnier or Kathi Tunheim, or through administrators Mark Braun or Ken Westphal.

Off-Campus Events of Interest
Equestrian Team Show...The Gustavus Equestrian Team is hosting a Hunt Seat horse show for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Zone 7 Region 3. The event will take place Sept. 27-28 at the Nicollet County Fairgrounds in St. Peter. College equestrian teams from Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin will be competing. Spectators are welcome and there is no charge for admission. Concessions will be available.
Social Media Updates
- Check out a new Facebook page called "Beneath the Crown". Started by student Nick Theisen '15 and the Office of Marketing and Communication, the page is inspired by the website/facebook page Humans of New York. The project aims to use social media to foster a more interconnected and understanding community as well as to create a more realistic and fulsome representation of the human experience at Gustavus.
Weekend Home Athletic Events
Support the Golden Gusties at one or more of these home athletic events this weekend:
- The men's tennis team will host the 2014 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships on Sept. 26-28.
- The men's soccer team will host St. John's at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27.
- The volleyball team will host St. Thomas at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27.
Congregational Outreach
Retreats...Church Relations in the Center for Servant Leadership will host a day confirmation retreat for Trinity Lutheran Church of Owatonna on Sunday, September 28. The retreat program is a resource offered to ELCA congregations that are also members of the Gustavus Association of Congregations.

Inside Gustavus is a newsletter for Gustavus Adolphus College employees produced by the Office of Marketing and Communication. It is published weekly during the academic year (except during the week of Thanksgiving, the Christmas break, Touring Week, and the Spring and Easter breaks). Anyone may submit items by filling out an online submission form. While online submissions are preferred, items may also be submitted typewritten on a letter-sized sheet of paper.
