Convention 2012Celebrating 150 Years of Faith at Gustavus

Gustavus’s five core values have been identified as Community, Excellence, Faith, Justice, and Service. Each of these core values is being celebrated at various signature events throughout the College’s sesquicentennial year. The 25th annual Gustavus Adolphus College Association of Congregations (GACAC) Convention will celebrate the core value of Faith, and the theme for the day is Celebrating 150 Years of Faith at Gustavus.

The 2012 annual convention will be held on Saturday, April 21. Clergy and lay delegates from Association member congregations, as well as their guests, are encouraged to be with us for an uplifting day, featuring morning worship with beloved retired Gustavus chaplain Richard Elvee preaching and special music by Gustavus students, followed by a keynote address by the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, Presiding Bishop of the ELCA. Reflecting on the 2007 social statement of the ELCA, Our Calling in Education, his talk will address “The Future of Lutheran Higher Education.”

Prior to morning worship, an Association breakfast business meeting will be held for voting delegates of the GACAC (clergy and lay delegates). Included in the business of the day, Gustavus Board of Trustees, as well as the Association’s Board of Directors and Nominating Committee, will be elected. Guests attending with delegates will not attend the breakfast, but will enjoy coffee, light refreshments and fellowship and will also check in during this time. The campus bookstore will also be open.

At 12:30, following an informal light lunch for all, a “mobile food pack” service-learning event (organized by Feed My Starving Children) will be held in the Lund Arena. This event is co-sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans from Thrivent Choice dollars.

Pre-registration is needed for all clergy and delegates as well as guests planning to attend. Pre-registration is also necessary by clergy, delegates, and guests for those willing to help with the Feed My Starving Children food pack, the featured service-learning event during the afternoon.

We welcome all to attend, and we look forward to an inspirational day, and together time in sharing our faith and the work of our hands to serve God’s people in the world.
