Chris Nolting

Chris Nolting has been a Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics at Gustavus since 2023. In his classes, he focuses on including many worked example problems and opportunities for hands on learning in groups, and as many physics demonstrations as possible. As a computational astrophysicist, he enjoys showcasing examples related to astronomy whenever possible. His research focuses on the study of galaxy cluster environments and powerful jets from active galactic nuclei, supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies that accrete matter and power some of the brightest objects in the universe. This work is mainly done through numerical simulations on compute clusters and supercomputers using up to tens of thousands of processors simultaneously. Gustavus students working on research with Chris learn coding languages and data visualization techniques, and even 3D print some of the structures they simulate.

Chris is the faculty advisor to the Society of Physics Students and the Gustavus Engineering Club.

Outside of Gustavus, Chris a self-identifying nerd. He is a lover of board games, magic the gathering, Marvel movies, anime, and going on walks with his dog.
 

Chris Nolting

Mark Braun

Prior to joining the Gustavus faculty in 1990, Mark worked in broadcasting. He brings extensive administrative experience spanning more than 15 years, including nine years as Chief Academic Officer—serving as Provost at Gustavus Adolphus College and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Augustana University. He previously held the position of Associate Dean of the College at Gustavus for seven years.

Mark has an extensive record of service to the field of higher education and was recognized nationally by the Council of Independent Colleges with its Chief Academic Officer Award. He served on the executive committee of the board of directors for the American Conference of Academic Deans, on assessment and planning teams for the Association of American Colleges and Universities, and on the board of directors for the Broadcast Education Association in Washington DC. He also chaired the board of directors of The Collaboration for the Advancement of College Teaching and Learning, and was on the executive committee of the board for the Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota. He was awarded the Outstanding Citizen Award from the City of Mankato for his work with the Department of Public Safety.

Toshiyuki Sakuragi

Toshiyuki Sakuragi is a professor of Japanese language and culture whose expertise draws from intercultural communication and cognitive linguistics. His research examines cultural influences on communication and language learning, addressing topics such as the relationship between attitudes toward language study and cross-cultural attitudes, the cognitive processes underlying classifier choice, and cultural influences on shyness. His research articles have appeared in journals such as the Journal of Psycholinguistic Research and the International Journal of Intercultural Relations.

Among his Japanese-language publications are two books. His single-authored book, 映画で異文化体験 (Experiencing Cultures Through Film), explores the use of film to promote intercultural learning. His co-authored college textbook, はじめて学ぶ異文化コミュニケーション (Introduction to Intercultural Communication), has been widely adopted in Japan and has gone through multiple printings.

Professor Sakuragi teaches Japanese language as well as courses on Japanese cinema and intercultural film. He has also led numerous travel courses to Japan and has taught in the Summer and Winter Japanese Language and Culture Program at Hosei University in Tokyo.

Valerie Walker

Valerie Struthers Walker, PhD,  is a teacher educator with a passion for children’s literature, inquiry-based learning and working alongside beginning and experienced teachers. She began her career as an elementary and middle school teacher in two international schools: the American International School in Bamako, Mali and the American International School of Vienna, Austria. Dr. Walker joined the Gustavus Education Department in 2010 and currently teaches elementary language arts and social studies methods and supervises practicum and student teachers.

Dr. Walker is active in both local and national professional organizations such as the National Council for the Social Studies, the Minnesota Council of Social Studies, and the Minnesota Council of Economic Education. Highlights of her career include serving on the Notable Social Studies Trade Book Award committee, collaborating with K-8 teachers to publish social studies curricula, and leading professional development workshops on reading and teaching with diverse children’s literature.

In her spare time, Dr. Walker enjoys strengthening her French skills, hiking with her family, and binging the newest Netflix shows with her kids.

Pamela Conners

Pamela K. Conners, PhD serves as interim Provost and Dean of the College. In this role, she collaborates with faculty and staff to ensure a transformative student experience defined by academic excellence and a vibrant campus life.

A member of the Gustavus community since 2011, Dr. Conners is Professor of Communication Studies, with a scholarly focus on rhetoric and public policy. She has taught courses such as Public Discourse, Community Advocacy, and Rhetorical Criticism. Her research examining how public discourse and deliberation function in a democracy has been published in Rhetoric & Public Affairs and Western Journal of Communication.

Dr. Conners has been recognized for her interdisciplinary work, such as integrating deliberative pedagogy into science courses, a project featured in the Journal of Chemical Education. Connecting theory to practice for students, she helped launch the Gustavus Public Deliberation & Dialogue program in 2018, through which students across campus engage in thoughtful discussion about critical issues of common concern.

Dr. Conners has held numerous leadership roles at Gustavus, including Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, Dean of Faculty Development, Director of the John S. Kendall Center for Engaged Learning, and Director of Undergraduate Research, Scholarship, Creativity, and Dialogue.

Laura Hildreth

Dr. Laura Hildreth is an associate professor of statistics in the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics. Her teaching at Gustavus spans the entire statistics curriculum from introductory statistics to advanced statistical modeling. Along with her statistics colleagues, Dr. Hildreth has redesigned and modernized the statistics major and minor by incorporating recommendations from the American Statistical Association. This has included developing and teaching several new courses including MCS-243: Design and Analysis of Experiments, MCS-348: Advanced Statistical Modeling, and MCS-349: Statistical Consulting.

Dr. Hildreth's scholarship encompasses various areas. Her research interests include statistics education with a focus on writing in the statistics curriculum, multivariate statistics, and statistical consulting. This work has led to multiple interdisciplinary collaborations and resulted in publications in journals such as the Journal of Statistics and Data Science Education, Structural Equation Modeling: A Multidisciplinary Journal, and Statistics and Public Policy.

Outside of the classroom, Dr. Hildreth has held several service roles. This has included serving as the actuarial science adviser at Gustavus, being an AP Statistics reader since 2021, serving as the Program Chair for the Section on Statistics and Data Science Education at the 2024 Joint Statistical Meetings, and serving as the 2014-2015 President of the Montana Chapter of the American Statistical Association.

Laura Hildreth

Matthew Rightmire

Born and raised in Wisconsin, Matthew attended the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire as a Blugold Fellow where he earned a comprehensive bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts. His work includes both production and front-of-house operations at the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center, the Heyde Center for the Arts in Chippewa Falls, and the Chippewa Valley Theatre Guild in Eau Claire.

In 2009, he began working as the Scenic Studio Supervisor for the Department of Music & Theatre Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

In 2011, Matthew left Wisconsin to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His time as a graduate student was distinguished as a Hixson-Lied Fellow in the Johnny Carson School of Theatre & Film. His contributions to the theatre program were honored by receiving the Porter Award for Creativity in Theatre and being selected to join the school’s Order of the Purple Mask.

Since receiving his MFA in Design & Technical Production, Matthew has been the Technical Director for the Alpine Theatre Project’s 2014 season in Whitefish, Montana, the Technical Director and Scenic/Lighting/Sound Designer for the Eau Claire Children’s Theatre, and a lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

His role as professor at Gustavus, where he teaches stagecraft, computer-aided drafting, and stage management courses, is also filled with days overseeing the construction of the scenic elements for all of the department's productions in theatre and dance.

Stephanie Otto

A graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College herself, Stephanie was delighted to return to her undergraduate alma mater as a professor. Stephanie teaches courses both within and beyond the Exercise Physiology major, and she finds student mentorship to be among the most rewarding aspects of her work. Her teaching philosophy is grounded in the concept of vocation, emphasizing the integration of academic learning with personal purpose. She is committed to helping students discern how their skills, values, and passions can be meaningfully applied in service to others, preparing them not only for professional success but also for lives of purpose and engagement. Research is intentionally embedded within the Exercise Physiology curriculum at Gustavus, and she regularly serves as a faculty mentor for multiple student-led, independent research projects. These projects are frequently presented at local, regional, and national conferences across the country.

Her scholarly interests focus on the relationship between physical activity and bone mineral density. Most recently, she published an article in the International Journal of Fitness titled “Step Count, Calcium Intake, and Bone Mineral Density Among Women Using Depo-Provera.”

Stephanie is an active presenter and attendee at national meetings of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), where she has earned Fellow status. She has also served on the ACSM Women, Sport, and Physical Activity Committee.

Christine Nessler

For more than twenty years, Christine Nessler worked as a marketing and public relations professional across government, nonprofit, and for-profit sectors. As a former entrepreneur and franchise owner, she has experience building brands from the ground up and maintaining a strong community presence. Beyond the business world, creative writing is her primary passion. As a freelance writer, she contributed articles to various regional publications. Her short stories and essays are featured in Half and One online literary journal and The Motherly Collective.

In 2024, Nessler joined the faculty at Gustavus. Students in her courses gain hands-on experience and the practical skills necessary to thrive in the workplace by applying classroom concepts to real-world community and business projects. In Nessler’s marketing courses, her favorite part of the semester is watching the students gain confidence as they serve as consultants for local business clients. As they develop strategic marketing plans, students also develop communication, project management, and leadership skills. Similarly, in Introduction to Management, her students build their own business from the ground up. According to Nessler, watching their final business plan presentations makes her optimistic about their futures as business and community leaders.

Outside of the classroom, Nessler serves on the Board of Directors for the Harry Meyering Center, volunteers as a reader of creative nonfiction for The Good Life Review, and cheers on her three kids at their various activities.

Espen Fredrick

Espen Fredrick is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics. A 2021 Gustavus alumnus, Dr. Fredrick earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2025 before returning to the college, bringing with him a strong commitment to undergraduate education and student-centered research.

In the classroom, Dr. Fredrick emphasizes preparing students for future careers in science and related fields through a teaching philosophy centering on helping students develop the habits needed for independent problem solving. His favorite courses to teach include electromagnetic theory and quantum mechanics, where he enjoys helping students contextualize new mathematical formalisms to build their own physical intuition.

Dr. Fredrick’s research focuses on space plasma physics, particularly the interaction between the solar wind and Earth’s magnetic field. His work aims to improve predictions of how and when solar wind disturbances impact near-Earth space, contributing to a broader understanding of space weather and its effects on technological systems. At Gustavus, he is interested in involving undergraduates in research that emphasizes the accessibility of computational physics and empowers students to conduct meaningful research beyond traditional settings.

Beyond teaching and research, Dr. Fredrick currently assists students who operate the Olin Observatory, helping them gain hands-on experience with astronomical instrumentation. He values close collaboration with students and sees mentoring as one of the most rewarding aspects of his role. He is excited to help students grow as scientists, problem solvers, and future leaders.

Espen Fredrick

Rebecca Fremo

Rebecca Taylor Fremo (Professor of English) earned her Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition at Ohio State University after completing her BA and MA in English at Virginia Tech. In the nearly three decades she’s spent at Gustavus, she’s served as English department chair, English co-chair, Director of Writing Across the Curriculum, and Director of the Writing Center. But Fremo’s real passion is teaching writing, and she’s been awarded the Edgar M. Carlson Award and the Swenson and Bunn Award for this work. Fremo likes nothing better than rolling up her sleeves and sitting side by side with student writers as they work through the challenges of sharing their stories. Fremo has published a variety of scholarly essays about teaching writing, but she’s most excited about her work as a creative writer. She recently completed a memoir titled Controlled Burn, which applies her observations as a gardener to her experiences raising three neurodivergent sons. Her poems and essays appear in journals including Mud Season Review, Mankato Magazine, Full Grown People, Paper Darts, and Water~Stone Review. She is also the author of one collection of poetry, Moving This Body, and a chapbook of poems titled Chasing Northern Lights. When she’s not at work, she’s probably in her garden or daydreaming about her next visit to the North Shore. She’s originally from Richmond, Virginia and still dreads the Minnesota winters–but the summers are worth it! 
 

Rebecca Fremo

David Stamps

Dr. David Stamps anchors his career in the deliberate synthesis of creative practice, academic inquiry, and institutional leadership. As a multi-faceted educator and administrator, he serves as the Assistant Provost of Faculty Development and Support, the Director of the John S. Kendall Center for Engaged Learning, and an Associate Professor of Music and Arts Entrepreneurship. Across all his roles, Dave is dedicated to cultivating environments where both faculty and students can thrive creatively, pedagogically, and professionally.

With a deep-rooted passion for music and the creative economy, Dave’s academic expertise encompasses jazz composition and arranging, music business and industry, recording technology, and jazz ensemble direction. His work as a composer and performer is recognized globally; his music has been performed on stages across five continents, spanning Asia, Australia, Europe, North America, and South America. Extending the reach of the classroom onto the world stage, Dave’s international footprint includes significant time spent in Romania as a visiting artist and scholar.

In his administrative capacities, Dave is a collaborative leader championing the future of higher education. His primary focus areas include faculty development, inclusive mentoring, arts administration, and the strategic, ethical engagement with artificial intelligence (AI) in learning environments. Whether navigating the impact of emerging technologies in the classroom or building equitable mentoring frameworks, Dave focuses on empowering educators to excel in an ever-changing academic landscape.

Beyond his campus responsibilities, Dave is the co-founder and Past President of the International Society of Jazz Arrangers & Composers (ISJAC), an organization dedicated to fostering advocacy, community, and the appreciation of new works among jazz creators worldwide.
