President Cabinet Summary

April 17 Cabinet Meeting Summary

1.Special Assistant to the President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Alisa Rosenthal gave an update on the work of the President’s Council for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and reported that the Circle Drive cameras will be installed soon.

2.Special Assistant to the President for Strategy Kathi Tunheim gave an update on Gustavus Acts, especially the work in developing the key performance indicators for the seven priority strategies.

3. Members reviewed the agenda for the April 19-20 Board meeting, including the topics for the strategic discussion session on Thursday afternoon.

4. Provost Kelly indicated that continued discussions are being held on the harassment policy, but it will be ready for the Board’s review (not approval) at the April meeting. The discrimination and harassment policies will be available for the Board’s review and approval at the June Board meeting.]

April 24 Cabinet Meeting Summary

1.  Assistant Vice President for Human Resources Julie Kline and Human Resources Business Partner Ann Johnson were present to review the Gallup Employee Engagement survey results and to discuss next steps. Gallup representatives will be meeting with Cabinet members in early May to review the results in more detail. Employee focus groups will be conducted at a later date.

2. Julie and Ann also introduced draft statements for a Gustavus compensation philosophy and a performance management philosophy. The Strategy 3.3/3.4 Committee will update the draft philosophies applying suggestions made by Cabinet members.

3. Members approved the hiring of a full-time Student Life replacement position (Campus Safety Assistant Director).

4. Members approved the hiring of a full-time Chaplain’s Office replacement position (Chaplain and Director of Campus Ministries).

5. Discussion was held regarding the activities related to the April 19-20 Board meeting.

Campus Happenings

MAYDAY! Peace Conference Featuring Nobel Peace Prize Winner...The MAYDAY! Peace Conference is on Wednesday, May 2 starting at 10 a.m. in Christ Chapel. Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee will share her inspiring story of working to end the civil war in Liberia and the role women serve in creating peace around the world. Following the keynote address is a luncheon sponsored by the Friends of the Library - Gustavus Library Associates. The luncheon will feature the remarks "Me and You, Too: Women Stories in Peace Building" given by Mikka McCracken '09 of ELCA World Hunger. At 1:15 p.m., there will be a movie screening of the documentary about Ms. Gbowee's life and 2:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall will be a discussion of the main themes of the day. Gustavus students, faculty, and staff will need to show their Gustavus ID for entrance into Chapel. To learn more about the event, visit the online page.

Save the Date: Fourth Annual Matthias Wahlstrom Lecture…Please mark your calendar for 4:30-5:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, 2018 in Beck Hall 101. Marie Walker, Professor of Psychological Science, will present her talk entitled “Liberal Arts and Diversity.” President Rebecca Bergman will introduce Walker, and refreshments will be provided for conversation after the lecture.
