Save the Date...The Diversity Center asks that you please join us in welcoming Ericka Huggins to campus on Monday, February 20 and Tuesday, February 21 as part of our Black History Month programming.
Ericka Huggins is a human rights activist, poet, educator, Black Panther leader, and former political prisoner. For the past 30 years, she has lectured throughout the United States and internationally. Her extraordinary life experiences have enabled her to speak personally and eloquently on issues relating to the physical and emotional well-being of women, children and youth, whole being education. She has also spoken on issues of over incarceration, and the role of the spiritual practice in sustaining activism and promoting change. On Monday, February 20 and Tuesday, February 21, Ericka Huggins will join the Gustavus community for a film screening of The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution followed by a one-hour Q&A, and a lecture on "Igniting a Grassroots Movement in the 21st Century." More details about both events are listed below.
Monday, February 20 from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m. in Wallenberg
The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution Film Screening and Q&A. The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution is the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party, its significance to the broader American culture, its cultural and political awakening for black people, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Stanley Nelson goes straight to the source, weaving a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police, FBI informants, journalists, white supporters and detractors, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it. Featuring Kathleen Cleaver, Jamal Joseph, and many others, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution is an essential history and a vibrant chronicle of this pivotal movement that birthed a new revolutionary culture in America.
Tuesday, February 21 from 7 - 9 p.m. in Alumni Hall

Risk Management Minute: Winter Weather and Pedestrian Safety... Please be aware of pedestrian safety during the snow and ice season. Always wear proper footwear with good traction and look at the walking surface ahead of you. Keep your eyes and ears alert to what’s going on around you. Use sidewalks that have already been cleared when available. If you are coming out from behind a snowbank, stop first and check to see if it is safe. You may be less visible because of snow piles or glare off of the snow. Vehicles will have a harder time stopping on slippery surfaces. Stay away from roads and sidewalks when snow removal equipment is trying to clear the snow and as they treat the road and sidewalk surfaces. Be aware that snow removal equipment moves backwards, forwards and may turn sharply. Do not walk in front of or directly behind snow removal equipment! Make sure drivers see you by making eye contact and wait for them to pass before crossing. Contact Physical Plant (x7504) to report slippery areas or those that need to be cleared. Contact Campus Safety (x8888) immediately if you may have been injured in a slip and fall injury.
