Inside Gustavus December 15, 2016 | Volume 49, Number 15
President Cabinet Summary
1. Advancement Consultant Jim Daniel discussed the work of the Advancement Office, trends in philanthropy, and the planned approach to future campaigns. Discussion ensued.
2. Members reviewed the January Board Meeting agenda and specifically the strategic discussion session topics of the Gustavus Acts implementation plan and the general education curriculum.
3. Cabinet members were asked to submit documentation to Assistant to the President Jolene Christensen by January 6 regarding progress on the assigned 2016 - 2017 institutional goals.
4. Members approved the hiring of a new position of Assistant Director of Residential Life and the elimination of one Area Coordinator position, effective summer 2017. The additional salary expense of an Assistant Director of Residential Life compared to an Area Coordinator will be more than offset by the revenue generated by using the vacated Area Coordinator apartment for student housing.

Parking Info for Christmas Break, J-Term, and Touring Week...If you are leaving your vehicle on campus during Christmas break you must park in the designated break parking in the Bjorling Lot directly west of the music building or, if that fills up, the designated break parking section in the Arbor View Lot. Any vehicles not moved to this location during break will be towed at the owner's expense. Look for the Break Parking signs to park in the correct area—cars parked in the wrong rows of Arbor View/Bjorling will still be towed at owner's expense ($80 minimum). Regular parking enforcement is in effect finals week, all of January Term, and Touring Week; always assume parking is enforced. Always register your vehicle with Campus Safety and have a valid permit displayed before parking. Please park according to permit color and note that Visitor parking is closed to students and employees at all times (24/7/365). Green permit parking lots are always no parking 2 - 7 a.m., seven days a week; as are the red permit parking rows in the Stadium (Beck) parking lot. Please contact Campus Safety with any questions 24-hours a day at 507-933-8888.
Academic Building Hours...Academic buildings will be open normal hours through Monday, December 19, and 7 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday, December 20 through Thursday, December 22. All academic buildings will be closed December 23 through January 2 (check the Lund Center for their posted hours). Normal building hours resume Monday, January 2. Students requiring access to academic buildings outside of these hours or when buildings are closed will need to have a gold "Permission for Admittance Card" issued by a faculty or staff member. Supervisors can request cards in advance from Lisa Octigan (eoctigan@gustavus.edu), or contact their department's administrative assistant.
Save the Date: Third Annual Matthias Wahlstrom Lecture...Please mark your calendar for Monday, February 20, 2017, 4:30-5:30 p.m. in Beck Hall 101. Michele Rusinko, Professor of Theatre and Dance, will present her talk entitled “Creativity, Resiliency, Dignity and a Good Life.” President Rebecca Bergman will introduce Rusinko, and refreshments will be provided for conversation after the lecture. https://gustavus.edu/provost/wahlstromlecture.php
A Request from the Advancement Office...As you get ready to leave campus for break, please pay attention to your incoming mail. If you receive any sort of donation, please forward it to the Advancement Office as soon as you can. The donors to Gustavus will be awaiting their 2016 receipt for their taxes. We would like to get that to them in a timely manner. If you have any questions about 2016 giving, please contact Ann Johnson at x6515.
Title IX Coordinator Update...Justine Stein, our new Title IX Sexual Assault Prevention Coordinator, will be joining Gustavus in early January. We are interested in setting up times with organizations or committees who are interested in meeting her. Our goals for these initial meetings are as follows:
- Welcome Justine to Gustavus
- Explain the role or mission of the committee or group she is meeting
- Communicate expectations of Justine's role
- Give her an idea of what your group sees as priorities for the role
- Provide guidance on what the group/committee feels they can do to support the success of the role and our prevention efforts
- Perspective on the campus climate and/or history
If your organization or committee is interested in setting up time to meet with Justine, please contact Julie Kline (jkline@gustavus.edu) in Human Resources.
