Chaplain Brian Konkol spoke on "The Embrace of Amen in the Community of God" at Imbali Lutheran Church (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa), at the invitation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa (ELCSA).

Ursula Lindqvist (Scandinavian Studies) has been elected to the Executive Committee of the Society for the Advancement of Scandinavian Study (SASS), the major national academic organization for the field. She is the second Gustavus faculty member to serve on this committee; Glenn Kranking (Scandinavian Studies and History) was elected in 2014. Their colleague Kjerstin Moody (Scandinavian Studies) is stepping up to chair the Executive Committee on Scandinavian Languages and Literatures within the national Modern Languages Association in 2016.

Eric Dugdale (Classics) moderated a panel on the modern reception of Athenian drama at the Society for Classical Studies conference in San Francisco.

2015 Tax Forms...W2 tax forms were mailed on Jan. 8 to all employees’ home addresses. Employees who are medical benefit eligible will be receiving one more required tax form 1095-C, to be mailed by Jan. 15, 2016. Please note the envelope for both the W2 and 1095-C look similar and read IMPORTANT TAX RETURN DOCUMENT ENCLOSED, on the outside of the envelope. Gustavus is an Applicable Large Employer subject to the employer shared responsibility provision in the Affordable Care Act. This form 1095-C includes information about the health insurance coverage offered to you by Gustavus which you will need to prepare your 2015 individual income tax return. If you should need an additional copy of either the W2 or 1095-C, you may print them from Web Advisor – Employee HR – W2 Statement or 1095-C statement. If you have any questions about your W2 or 1095-C forms, please consult with your tax accountant.

IMPORTANT: THE 1095-C FORM IS ONLY ISSUED TO EMPLOYEES THAT ARE MEDICAL BENEFIT ELIGIBLE.

Campus Happenings 

Class Schedule Modified for MLK Lecture...The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture will occur from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Mon., Jan. 18 in Christ Chapel. This year, Dr. Rashad Shabazz will speak on “Why Geography Matters in the Struggle for Racial Justice.” Dr. Shabazz will share the historical perspective of the geographic racial divide and present possibilities for how our country can continue to work towards equality. Classes that normally meet at or after 10:30 a.m. will start (and end) one hour later. Thus, classes that begin at 10:30 a.m. will start at 11:30 a.m. and so on. The event will also be live streamed.

Provost Q&A led by Provost Mark Braun will continue a series of informal discussion opportunities with Gustavus students. The “Provost’s Listening Post” will be set up once each month at the tables in upper level of the Campus Center. The goal is to provide a relaxed, informal setting for student questions and discussion about the College. Spring dates and times are scheduled for:

MinnPost covered the College's designation as the first Fair Trade college or university in Minnesota on Friday, Jan. 8.

Associate Provost Paula O'Loughlin was on WCCO radio on Sunday, Jan. 10 to preview President Obama's State of the Union Address.

The St. Peter Herald announced the College's Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Lecture, which will take place on Monday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. in Christ Chapel.

Dean of Financial Aid Doug Minter was quoted in a Mankato Free Press piece about a new student loan refinancing program announced by the state of Minnesota.

Off Campus Events

  • Chad Winterfeldt (Chaplain’s Office) will present an organ recital of music by 17th c. composer Matthias Weckmann and living American composer Frank Ferko on Sunday, Jan. 24, at 4:00 pm at Como Park Lutheran, 1376 Hoyt Ave West in Saint Paul. The recital will be repeated in Saint Peter on Friday, Feb. 12 at 7:00 pm, First Lutheran Church, 1114 W. Traverse Road.
  • Lois Peterson, Dept of Art/Art History will be having an exhibition of her recent mixed-media drawings at the Phipps Center for the Arts. The Phipps Center is located at 109 Locust Street in Hudson Wisconsin. The exhibit titled "Quiet Stories" will host a public opening reception 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. on Jan. 22. The exhibit will run from Jan. 22 - Feb. 28.
  • Saint Peter Community Childcare Center (SP3C) invites you to Burgers 4 Babies from 4 to 9 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 25 at Patricks. Support our "Come Grow With Us" campaign to expand our space at the Community Center and meet our community's need for more infant childcare spaces. A portion of every purchase of the bacon cheeseburger basket and $1 for every kid's meal purchase will be donated to SP3C. There will also be a Silent Auction (cash or check only please).   • INTRODUCING….Books in a Bag.  If you belong to a book club, come to the Saint Peter Public Library and check out Books in a Bag, a new project sponsored by the Friends of the Saint Peter Public Library. Each bag contains eight copies of the same title along with a folder containing book discussion questions and other information. Bags may be checked out for six weeks.
    The Friends of the Library welcomes members and patrons to contribute to the growth of the Books in a Bag program through donations made to the Friends of the Library. For information on Friends of the Library visit our website.

Obituaries

Stacie Miller, administrative assistant in the Department of Math, Computer Science, and Statistics and Department of Physics, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 10.  Stacie began at Gustavus in 2011 and served as the administrative assistant for the Department of Communication Studies and History before transitioning to her role in Olin Hall in 2013. Described by faculty members as personable, curious, and easy to work with, she was a warm and welcoming presence to all who visited her departments. Stacie's funeral will be 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016 at the Evergreen Funeral Home, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until time of service.  Interment will be at a later date.  Stacie's obituary can be read online
