Faculty/Staff Activities

Mimi Gerstbauer (Political Science) gave a research talk "Apologizing for Torture and More: Contrition in US Foreign Policy" to the International Relations Faculty at Collegium Civitas in Warsaw, Poland on April 13. Gerstbauer is a US Fulbright Scholar teaching at Collegium Civitas this spring. She will present a paper on this same research at Jagiellonian University Conference 2015 in Krakow, Poland in June.

Mark Kruger (Psychological SciencE) and Mark Lammers (Research Professor in Music) will be presenting a research paper at the 2015 conference of the Society for Music Performance and Cognition to be held at Vanderbilt University, August 1-5 of this year. The title of the paper is "Acoustic Feedback and Effort in Musical Performance: The impact of mutes on brass playing."

Lisa Heldke (Philosophy) was one of two plenary speakers at the 35th annual Salisbury University Philosophy Symposium, the topic of which was "What's on Your Plate? Food, Politics & Identity." She was also a principle speaker at the University of Iowa's Food For Thought Symposium, part of the university's food-themed semester. Her talk was titled "We're All Parasites: Eating, Guts and Fundamental Philosophical Categories."

Kristen Lowe (Art & Art History) will open an exhibition of all new work at Flanders and Associates Gallery in Uptown Minneapolis on May 9. Opening reception is from 6 to 8 p.m. More information is available online.

President's Cabinet Summary

The President's Cabinet met on Tuesday, April 21 and discussed the following items:

  • Possible Dates for a summer Cabinet retreat were discussed. Jolene will poll the Cabinet.
  • Discussion was held regarding the FY 2016 operating budget, including possible restructuring opportunities as a result of positions that will be vacated.  
  • Members approved the hiring of a full-time Administrative Assistant replacement position in the Departments of Biology/Geology.
  • Members approved the hiring of a full-time Administrative Assistant replacement position in the Department of Education.
  • Vice President Westphal made his annual reminder to the Cabinet that the College’s Educators Legal Liability (ELL) insurance requires the institution to provide timely notice to ELL of any actual claim as well as any incident that may develop into a claim.  This policy requires that incidents be reported to the insurer as soon as they are known by the institution.
  • Vice President Westphal indicated that the Board of Trustees will be discussing at its April Board meeting next steps for the renovation of the Anderson Building.

News & Announcements

Strategic Planning Process Meetings...Consultant Ann Duffield will be on campus Monday, April 27 to visit with members of the Gustavus community to learn your thoughts regarding the strategic planning process and timeline as well as to hear your hopes and dreams for the future of the College. The meetings will take place in the President's Dining Room and will be held from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for administrators and support staff; from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for faculty; and from 5 to 6 p.m. for students. Campus Happenings

April Faculty Meeting...The regular monthly meeting of the faculty will take place at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 24 in Alumni Hall.

Diversity Ball...The Diversity Awards Banquet will take place from 6 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, April 25 in Alumni Hall. Tickets are $10 and can be picked up at the CAO desk.

MAYDAY! Peace Conference...The 35th annual MAYDAY! Peace Conference at Gustavus Adolphus College is titled “The War Within: Can the Soldier Be at Peace?” and will be held Wednesday, April 29. This year’s Conference will feature a morning keynote address by Major Matthew Scherer ’93, an afternoon keynote address by photographer Devin Mitchell (Veteran Vision Project), and three panel discussions focusing on the challenges veterans face upon returning from military service. All events are free and open to the public. More information is available online.

Junior Art Major Exhibition...Junior art majors will have their work displayed at the Schaefer Gallery from April 27 through May 16. A public opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 27.

Sigma Xi Symposium...Gustavus students will present their research in the areas of biology, biochemistry, chemistry, geology, physics, and psychology on May 1. Sigma Xi oral presentations will be held in the Nobel Hall of Science, rooms 201 and 222, from 2:30 to 5 p.m. Schedules will be available on the Sigma Xi website and outside of the classrooms. There will also be a Sigma Xi new member recognition ceremony and social in the Nobel Atrium from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

Celebration of Creative Inquiry...This campus-wide forum to publicly share the creative inquiry of students will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 1 in the banquet rooms of the Jackson Campus Center.

Books in Bloom...This friend-raising initiative of Gustavus Library Associates will take place May 1-3 in the Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library. Floral arrangements will be on display from 3 to 6 p.m. on May 1, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 2, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 3. The event is free and open to the public.

Daily Sabbath Schedule... All are invited to the worship services at 10 a.m. weekdays and 10:30 a.m. Sundays. Services occur in Christ Chapel unless otherwise noted. The upcoming schedule is as follows.

Weekend Home Athletic Events

Support the Golden Gusties at one or more of these home athletic events this weekend:

  • The men's and women's track and field teams will host the Drake Alternative/Alumni Meet on Saturday, April 25.

  • The softball team will host a doubleheader against Hamline on Saturday, April 25 starting at 1 p.m.

  • The women's tennis team will host the College of St. Benedict at noon on Sunday, April 26.

Obituaries

  • Kathryn Winterfeldt, the mother of Chad Winterfeldt (Chaplains' Office), passed away on April 16 at the age of 64. She is survived by her father, Marvin; husband, Rev. David; son, Chad (Beth); brothers: James (Ruth), Gerald, Ronald (Peggy), and Jeffrey (Sarah); three grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and godchildren. A funeral service was held Tuesday, April 21 at First Lutheran Church in St. Peter. Memorials are preferred to ELCA World Hunger, ELCA Malaria Campaign, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, South Dakota Lutheran Outdoors, or South Dakota Synod Cameroon Roofs Fund.

Notices for immediate family members of current employees will be published in the Inside Gustavus or the Summer Scoop unless they occur during a publication break, in which case they will be posted on employee-l.

Births

  • Baker and Anna Lawley are happy to announce the arrival of Finn Drennen (5 lbs 14 oz) and Cleo Virginia (6 lbs 7 oz) on March 20. Big sister Phoebe (age 3.5) is thrilled to welcome both a little sister and brother to the family. Parents are ecstatic to say everyone is healthy and doing great, aside from dealing with sleep deprivation.
