Faculty/Staff Activities

Tom McHugh (Admission) and co-presenters Samantha Savoie (St. Catherine University), Norma Gutierrez (University of Minnesota, Twin Cities) and Mai Chue Moua (St. Catherine University) presented a session titled 'The MACAC Mentorship Program: Answer to Social Networking' at the 2013 Spring Conference of the Minnesota Association for College Admission Counseling (MACAC).

Students in Greg Mueller's (Sesquicentennial Sculptor) Sculpture 234 class will have their sculptural bone forms installed on the Washington DC Mall June 8-10. The castings will be part of One Million Bones, an art installation in collaboration with many university art departments across the globe. The Project attempts to raise awareness of on-going global genocide. More information is available online at onemillionbones.org.

Barbara Fister (Library) presented the closing plenary talk, "Hacking Knowledge: Information Literacy as Creative Participation" at the Michigan Library Association Academic Libraries annual conference.

Kathi Tunheim (Economics and Management) recently had two of her papers accepted for publication. Kathi and Dr. Gary McLean (Texas A&M) coauthored, “What Is the Experience like of Leaving a College Presidency of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America: A Phenomenological Study.” This paper will be published in a forthcoming issue (Spring-2014) of Journal of Academic Administration in Higher Education. A second paper coauthored by Kathi and a sophomore E/M major, Aimee Goldschmidt, “Exploring the Role of Calling in the Professional Journeys of College Presidents” has been accepted for publication in the Fall 2013 issue of the Journal of Leadership, Accountability and Ethics.

Larry Potts (Emeritus, Chemistry) presented a talk titled “At What Analysis Times Does LCXLC Become Superior in Peak Capacity To 1-Dimensional LC?" (coauthor Peter Carr) at the Minnesota Chromatography Forum in Minneapolis on March 9. Potts and Carr have collaborated on several talks and papers since 2008. "LC" means liquid chromatography, an analytical separation technique.

Glenn Kranking (History, Scandinavian Studies) has been elected Vice President of the Society for Historians of Scandinavia, a 2-year term followed by another 2-year term as President.

Student Achievements

Senior Ally Voss has been awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. The track and field competitor becomes the 34th Gustavus student-athlete to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship since football player James Goodwin became the first in 1974. Earlier this year, Voss received a Fulbright Grant to teach English in Spain next year.

  • National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Stipends Reminder

    This is a friendly reminder that the NEH Summer Stipends program provides individuals with an opportunity to pursue research in the humanities. Faculty interested in submitting an application should send an email so indicating to Bob Weisenfeld (bweis@gustavus.edu) by July 1. Gustavus is able to nominate two faculty. Bob will follow up in July with those interested regarding the nomination process. The online application deadline is September 26. For more information, please see

President's Cabinet Summary

The President's Cabinet met on Tuesday, May 14 and Tuesday, May 21 and discussed the following items:

  • The work of the 2013-14 Internal Budget Committee was discussed.
  • The question/answer format for the all-employee meeting on May 23 was briefly discussed.
  • Discussion was held regarding follow-up to the student forums, employee forums, and to the Board/faculty workshops regarding the future of the liberal arts.
  • Discussion was held regarding the live Gustavus Town Hall Meeting (interactive phone call) with alumni, parents, and friends at 7 p.m. on May 23.
  • Members approved the hiring of the replacement position of the counseling/advising administrative assistant.
  • Members approved the increased hours for the ELL academic support specialist position, due to the increased number of students needing assistance in the next academic year.
  • The chaplain candidate visits were discussed.
  • Members approved the hiring of the replacement position of assistant director for church relations.
  • Members approved the proposed tribute gift policy for the Arboretum.

Join Weight Watchers...Weight Watchers at Scholarship America is currently recruiting new members! TLC Honored...Tennis and Life Camps at Gustavus has recently been featured in the Star Tribune's "Best of MN" as Best Tennis Camp. The camp, which has been running since 1977, was gifted to Gustavus in 2010 by Steve and Barb Wilkinson. TLC's non-profit status will allow more than 100 campers to attend on scholarship this summer alone. Commencement...Commencement exercises for the graduating class of 2013 will being at 2 p.m. with the procession beginning at 1:45 p.m.

Employee Picnic...The annual Gustavus Employee Picnic will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 4 in the Evelyn Young Dining Room. The menu includes pulled pork, hamburgers, black bean burgers, onion rings, baked beans, vegetarian baked beans, watermelon wedges, grape clusters, pasta salad, assorted desserts, and raspberry lemonade.
