GLBT AWARENESS 101

Cost to Participants: $250

Graduate Credit(s) Available: 1 semester credit at an additional cost of $100 (negotiated project required)

A three-day workshop designed not only to inform educators about gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) related issues in education but also to discuss topics relevant to the educational experiences of those youth.

Why is this topic relevant?

  • Because GLBT students are in our schools and in our classrooms and have a right to an education in a safe environment
  • Because according to a Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network (GLSEN) study over 90% of GLBT youth report that they hear homophobic comments being made at their schools
  • Because we need to all start being a part of the solution rather than a part of the problem

What will this workshop include?

  • Current issues surrounding GLBT youth in our communities and schools
  • An in-depth look at the harmful effects of homophobia
  • GLBT at-risk youth and suicide
  • Helpful strategies for dealing with anti-gay comments in the classroom
  • Numerous resources for personal and classroom use
  • A chance to interact with a GLBT youth panel
  • Activities, videos, and in-depth small-group and large-group discussions

What are the course times?
The course will run from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. each day. A one-hour lunch break will be provided.

Workshop Presenters:

Angel Salathe is a Social Studies teacher and GSA Advisor at Crossroads Alternative High School in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Angel graduated from Saint Mary’s University in Winona in 2001 with a Masters in Education degree. She is a 1995 graduate of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota.

A teacher at Champlin Park High School, Martha Pedersen created and advises the school’s gay-straight alliance group. She has also facilitated several school district inservices regarding GLBT issues.
