English Teaching Assistants at United International College
Arrangements and Responsibilities
The English Language Centre (ELC) at the United International College (UIC) recruits Teaching Assistants (TAs) for the academic year (September through June). Candidates must hold a completed bachelors degree in any discipline. The responsibility of a TA is to support the ELC with its mission of English language instruction assisting students in achieving an acceptable standard of English equivalent to students from tertiary institutions in Hong Kong and providing discipline specific assistance to students for their majors.
Requirements of TAs
1. grade students' weekly journals, test papers or short essays.
2. team teach with teachers.
3. take responsibility in organizing club activities such as English Speaking Club, Culture Club, Music Club, Writing Club etc.
4. provide TESL tutorials and assistance to students from all majors in the Writing Centre,
5. provide tutorials or team teach in the course Academic Reading and writing.
6. assist in running activities for UIC.
Provisions for English Language Centre TAs
1. UIC will provide free lodging (except for utilities charge for water and electricity) in the student dorm; health insurance; visa application and a return (round trip) air ticket from USA to Hong Kong plus ferry trip to Zhuhai; please note that Chinese university dorms are different and TAs have to adjust to the Chinese situation.
2. free local cultural trips in Zhuhai
3. a monthly allowance of RMB5000 from September to end of June - during this period TAs are involved in teaching and organizing activities.
4. two Chinese language classes a week, 1.5 hours each using the mode of language exchange or class teaching.
The total hours of work a week would be an average of 20 hours per person during term time. TAs can apply for leave and go on tours when students are on vacation.
