Description

Presented by Dr. David Obermiller (Department of History, Environmental Studies Program and Japanese Studies)

China's enviable double-digit economic growth the past two decades had allowed it to become the world's second largest economy and is poised to pass the US economy sometime in the next ten years. This growth, however, has come at the expense of China's environment. The degradation of China's environment has not only produced social and political unrest, it also had begun to undermine China's economic growth. Moreover, China's acute need to develop its economy also has global ecological consequences that is not fully appreciated in the West, especially the simultaneous role of the West plays in China's economic growth and environmental destruction.
