Description

Join us on Friday, April 24 for New Faculty Scholarship Showcase - Patrick Heath. Mental health stigma (MHS) reduces the likelihood that someone will seek out psychological services, prolonging psychological distress. However, it's possible that MHS might also impact physical health given it's conceptualization as a chronic source of stress. This study examined relationships between MHS, physical health, and treatment seeking for medical concerns using a sample of 790 college students. MHS was related to a higher tendency to avoid seeking help from medical professionals for health concerns. Additionally, those experiencing heightened stress experienced higher levels of physical symptomatology, and this effect was strengthened for those reporting higher levels of MHS. Implications and future directions are highlighted. See his Poster Session at 2 p.m. in Alumni Hall, before the faculty meeting.
