Description

J-term Reading Group: What is "Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy" and Why Does it Matter? The Kendall Center for Engaged Learning and the Center for International and Cultural Education are sponsoring a J-Term Reading Group on Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP). In this reading group, facilitated by Carly Overfelt and Sidonia Alenuma-Nimoh, we'll read fromCulturally Sustaining Pedagogies: Teaching and Learning for Justice in a Changing World(2017),edited byDjango Paris and H. Samy Alim. According to Paris and Alim, CSP "seeks to perpetuate and foster--to sustain--linguistic, literate, and cultural pluralism as part of schooling for positive social transformation" (1). As we read we'll ask, what does that mean? What does that look like in the classroom? Is CSP significantly different from previous initiatives towards equity and inclusion?
