Description

The Department of Music presents vocalist Maria Jette with accompanist Mary Jo Gothmann in concert as part of the Colloquium Concert Series. This performance was originally scheduled for Saturday, March 23, but has been moved to Sunday, March 24.

Program information:

Wouldn't a trip to sunny France be nice right around now? Not current France, but the Golden Age of French song from Gounod to Poulenc! Along with Chabrier, Massenet and Duparc, two fascinating and successful women are on the program: singer/composer Pauline Viardot and Germaine Tailleferre, the sole female member of Les Six.

Maria Jette has selected some of her favorite mélodies and chansons, as well as rarely-sung (or heard) but utterly delectable songs and piano solos from this rich vein, which ranges from sunny and simple through poignant and complex...and ends in a cabaret. (Berets optional.)

About the performer:

Maria Jette began her professional life performing a combination of often excruciatingly difficult yet sometimes beautiful contemporary music and generally beautiful but often difficult early music. She rapidly branched out into other eras and styles and, as she likes almost everything, has now sung it. She has performed with innumerable orchestras and chamber groups, in operas, and at musical festivals throughout the country and abroad, as well as in her home base of Minneapolis-St. Paul (Minnesota Orchestra, SPCO, Chamber Music Society of MN, Lyra Baroque, Vocalessence et al.). She made many appearances on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion in its last 20+ years and has performed her own production of Rob Kapilow's mini-opera setting of Dr. Seuss's Green Eggs and Ham with festivals, orchestras, and chamber groups around the USA. For her service to new music, she was awarded a life membership by the American Composers Forum.
