Description
"Yellow Earth" (Huang Tu Di, 1984) directed by Chen Kai Ge, cinematography by Zhang Yimou. Yellow Earth focuses on the story of a Communist soldier who is sent to the countryside to collect folk songs for the Communist Revolution. The movie was the directorial debut for Chen Kai Ge, and the cinematographic collaboration with Zhang Yimou is unique. The film is a landmark in Chinese film history which, although produced under state sponsorship and control, was the first film to legitimately question the kind of Communist propaganda that had dominated film production there for decades.
