Description
John Gaunt, painter and Gustavus class of 1991, will be in residence in the Department of Art/Art History and will deliver an artist talk about his work on beginning at 3:30 p.m. and followed by a gallery opening in Schaefer Gallery in the art building. Please join the art department in welcoming John back to the campus. The exhibition of Gaunt's recent paintings explore, through abstract graphic scaffolding, his sustained perpetual and analytical study of the shifting architecture of rivers. The work reflects a particular attitude about an intuitive process, where chance and improvisation allow themes to emerge organically throughout the work. The geology, biology and hydrology of water are frequently examined in the paintings from an aerial view, positioning the viewer downward to contemplate configurations of light, pattern, mark and edge.
