Eric Elias

Faculty

Senior Continuing Lab Instructor in Biology

I have been interested in the outdoors since I was a kid and have been fortunate enough to have found a career that lets me help others get excited about our natural world.  At Gustavus I primarily teach two of the four "core" lab courses in the Biology Department.  I also teach an experiential January-term course Minnesota Aquatic Stewardship (Bio 131).  In this course, students learn about fish and aquatic insect biology, freshwater ecosystems, and ways they can become informed and involved environmental stewards through, among other things, fly tying and fly fishing.  I also serve as a faculty sponsor for January Career Exploration Internships.

My professional interests include the disruption of the reproductive endocrine systems of fishes by environmental estrogens, the natural history study of nongames freshwater fishes, and aquatic entomology.

I live in St. Peter with my wife, Betsy, and our three children: Will, Iris, and June.
