Dr. Robert Gazzola '83, M.D.
Medical Director and Preceptor

Dr. Gazzola practices family medicine at Mankato Clinic in St. Peter. A Gustavus alum and Mankato native, Dr. Gazzola received his medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed an internship and residency at Appleton Family Practice Center (Appleton, WI). Dr. Gazzola serves as the Medical Director for the ATP and students observe and interact with Dr. Gazzola during patient care at Daniels Health Center.

Leah Rutz
Leah Rutz, LAT, ATC – Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer
Preceptor

Leah Rutz is the athletic trainer for St. Peter High School during the 2018-2019 school year. Leah is a 2019 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a B.S. in Athletic Training. She is currently working on a Master of Applied Exercise Science: Human Movement Science through the University of Concordia-Chicago.

This is Leah's first year as a Preceptor for the Athletic Training Program. Students observe and interact with Leah and the high school athletes in the Saint Peter High School Athletic Training Facility as well as at athletic events.


Kim Penkert
Kim Penkert, LAT, ATC
Preceptor

Kimberly Penkert will be entering her 16th year as the athletic trainer for New Prague High School during the 2019-2020 school year. Kimberly is a 2004 graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato with a B.S. in Athletic Training and minors in Corporate and Community Fitness and Athletic Coaching.

Kimberly is an employee of Mayo Clinic Health System and is contracted out by New Prague High School for her athletic training services. She also provides athletic training coverage for Tri-City United High School.

Kimberly has been a preceptor in the ATP since 2013. Students observe and interact with Kimberly in the New Prague High School Athletic Training Room as well as at athletic events.


Melissa Stenzel, LAT, ATC
Preceptor

Melissa serves as the certified athletic trainer at St. Francis Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine in Shakopee. She is currently contracted as the athletic trainer for Shakopee High School. Melissa is a 2013 graduate from the Athletic Training Program at the University of Northern Iowa. In 2015, she graduated from Minnesota State University-Mankato with her Master’s in Sport Management. Melissa has been a preceptor in the ATP since 2013. Students observe and assist Melissa in the evaluation and treatment of high school student-athletes in the Shakopee High School Athletic Training Room and during athletic events.


Scott Mangen '10, LAT, ATC
Preceptor

Scott Mangen will be entering his 7th year as an athletic trainer at New Ulm Medical Center during the 2019-2020 school year. Scott is a 2011 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, with a B.A. majoring in Athletic Training and Health Fitness.

Scott is an employee of Allina Health System. He works in the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute and provides athletic training coverage for New Ulm High School and Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School.

Scott has been a preceptor in the ATP since 2015. Students observe and interact with Scott at New Ulm High School


Marcus Hopp LAT, ATC
Preceptor

Marcus Hopp has been the Head Athletic Trainer at Martin Luther College since 2000. He is employed through the New Ulm Medical Center*, which is part of Allina Health, as the Sports Medicine Director. Hopp received his Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training and a minor in health and exercise science in 1999 from North Dakota State University.

Hopp is the main contact for the football and volleyball teams, as well as all MLC winter and spring sports teams.

Hopp lives with his wife Michelle and their three children Ramsey, Levi, and Mitchell. In his spare time, Hopp enjoys hunting, fishing and golfing, and also coaches youth softball and baseball.

Max Pagel

Max Pagel, LAT, ATC, CSCS
Preceptor

Max has been the Assistant Athletic Trainer at Martin Luther College (MLC) in New Ulm, MN since 2016. He received his Bachelor of Athletic Training degree in Athletic Training from Minnesota State University, Mankato and my Master’s of Science degree from North Dakota State University in Advanced Athletic Training. Prior to working at MLC, he worked as a graduate assistant at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota and was also employed at OSR Physical Therapy in Chaska, MN.

He is the main contact for the men’s and women’s soccer teams, as well as the men’s and women’s cross country teams at MLC.


Brittany Fedor, MS, LAT, ATC
Preceptor

Brittany is a certified athletic trainer who specializes in dance medicine. She received her Bachelor's degrees in Athletic Training and Dance at Minnesota State University, Mankato and her Master's Degree in Exercise Science at University of California, Pennsylvania. As an athletic trainer, Brittany provides medical coverage and dance injury prevention classes at local dance competitions and dance camps around the Twin Cities. Currently Brittany is the official athletic trainer for the Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders and is with them at their practices each week and on the sidelines of Vikings home games. At Twin Cities Orthopedics Eden Prairie location, she runs the total joint program and also teaches return to dance technique.
