Exercise Physiology B.A. and Master of Athletic TrainingAthletic Training
Welcome to the 3+2 Exercise Physiology B.A. and Master of Athletic Training! The MAT will officially begin the summer before your 4th year. At this point, you are considered a graduate student. The last few credits of your undergraduate curriculum (both electives and the Exercise Physiology degree) will be replaced with your coursework from the MAT. Once you are enrolled in the MAT, you will be registered for your courses in a strict sequence across your two years. This sequence allows you to build upon your prerequisite knowledge that you bring to the MAT. Theory courses will go hand in hand with clinical experiences that grow in breadth and depth as you progress. The courses allow you to build on the theoretical foundations with psychomotor skills as you progress through the curriculum on your way towards being prepared for autonomous practice as an Athletic Trainer upon graduation! In the second year, the majority of courses will be online to allow flexibility for you to complete several immersive clinical experiences in vast and varied locations.
This document is a typical 5-year plan. Your particular first 3 years might look a little different. As long as all the prerequisite courses are done before the end of your junior year, you are on pace to successfully complete the 3+2 Exercise Physiology B.A. and Master of Athletic Training. Please check in regularly with your advisor and Dr. Mary Westby to make sure you are on target.
You can find more information on applying to the 3+2 Exercise Physiology B.A. and Master of Athletic Training Entrance route here.
If you are on financial aid for your undergraduate degree at Gustavus, this financial aid will continue through the fall of your MAT first year (fall of your 4th year at Gustavus - 8 terms at Gustavus) pending that you stay compliant with the requirements of your aid package. The courses from MAT Summer I and MAT Fall I can be used to fulfill your financial aid requirements. In addition, they can be used to count towards your 128 credits needed towards your B.A. degree.
Also, please note that the clinical experiences during the MAT will be time intensive (anywhere from 20 hours per week up to 40 hours per week depending on the term). As such, students wanting to do the 3+2 are discouraged from participating in a varsity athletic team during their 4th year/1st of the MAT. Clinical experiences will need to take priority over anything else in which the student is involved in order to make sure the student gets a well rounded and full experience. That conflict of time and interest will make committing to a team nearly impossible. If students want to compete in all 4 years of their varsity eligibility, they are encouraged to complete the post-baccalaureate route of entry and complete their masters degree after graduating from Gustavus with their BA.
This powerpoint can give you more information about athletic training as a profession and our program.
