Philip Morrison spent the majors of his career as professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is known for his work on the Manhattan Project during World War II. Following the dropping of the atomic bombs, he became a vocal advocate for arms control. He also was known for work in quantum physics, nuclear physics,high energy astrophysics, cosmic rays, and cosmology.
Morrison was a Nobel Conference speaker in 1991. He returned to Gustavus in the fall of 1997 as the Rydell distinguished professor and spoke on the topic of "One, or Many Solar Systems?"
