JOB SUMMARY:  The Special Gift Officer for Reunion Giving will focus on securing multi-year pledges and leadership gifts through personal solicitation, donor cultivation, building and convening reunion class committees, promoting participation, and stewarding donors, within the context of the five-year class reunion celebration cycle; thus, increasing the annual financial support for Gustavus Adolphus College students, faculty, and programs.

The Special Gift Officer’s responsibilities will focus on developing leadership committees within reunion classes and empowering these volunteers to work in partnership to secure gifts from classmates.  This includes, but is not limited to conducting telephone, direct mail and personal solicitations of prospective donors for annual gifts; researching prospective donors; coordinating donor cultivation; helping develop and produce cultivation, solicitation and acknowledgment packages; supporting direct mail, Phonathon, email, and internet marketing efforts; providing stewardship to present, and past donors; handling donor inquiries; among other duties as assigned.


  • Reports to the Associate Vice President for Advancement; works closely and collaboratively with the Director of the Gustavus Fund, the Assistant Director of the Gustavus Fund, the Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement, and the Assistant Director of Alumni and Parent Engagement.  
  • Identify and conduct face-to-face solicitations of philanthropic support for Gustavus Adolphus College, focusing on multi-year pledges in support of class reunion efforts.  
  • Maintains a portfolio of major gift prospects and meets mutually agreed to annual goals for cultivation and solicitation.
  • Maintain quality contact records and efficient tracking of results.
  • Build and maintain exceptional relationships, recognizing the needs and sensitivity of our constituents.
  • Effective working both independently and collegially.
  • Draft correspondence and reports as requested.
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the reunion giving effort through direct mail, Phonathon, e-mail, and internet activities.
  • Promote and exercise teamwork and collaboration when working with donors, volunteer groups and coworkers.
  • Spends at least 60% of one's time in the field with prospective donors, half of which may be time spent traveling outside of the Twin Cities region; participates in the College’s prospect review process.
  • Works with Gift Planning and Gustavus Fund staff to identify and move donors into the major gift pipeline.
  • In collaboration with the Gustavus Fund and the Alumni and Parent Engagement Teams, helps facilitate the long term engagement of the Senior Class Giving Program.   
  • Facilitates growth of affinity groups as needed.  
  • Coordinates through a donor-by-donor basis with individual Gift Planners to facilitate maximum reunion giving efforts and class success.  
  • Focus on priorities, meet deadlines, and achieve established fundraising goals.   
  • Works with colleagues to develop and implement successful marketing, education, recognition, sustainer and stewardship programs; participates in growing the membership of the College’s recognition societies.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with members of the entire Advancement staff.
  • All other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree required in related field.
  • Experience in development, fundraising or related field such as sales or marketing.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • High level of initiative and resourcefulness being results-oriented.


  • Experience in development and fundraising in a higher education institution or nonprofit organization.
  • Proven experience developing long term and strategic fundraising approaches.

Working Environment:

  • Must be able to work extended hours during the week and occasionally weekends.
  • Some travel required.
