JOB SUMMARY:

The Director of Media Relations and Internal Communication is charged with developing and writing news and feature stories for the College’s website, The Quarterly magazine, and social media outlets, as well as crafting press releases on behalf of various constituents of the College. This position serves as the primary contact and conduit for Gustavus Adolphus College in working with media representatives and will help raise the visibility, reputation, and image of the College by promoting its programs, events, and people through earned media placements. This person is also responsible for internal communication, including the all-College weekly newsletter Inside Gustavus and announcements to the campus community via memos from College leadership.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Continually keep the feature and news stories on the Gustavus website fresh with a strong rotation of new stories.
  • Contribute feature content regularly to The Quarterly magazine and other College publications.
  • Research, craft, and disseminate news releases, following up personally with the media as appropriate.
  • Develop relationships with members of the media.
  • Coordinate hometown news releases for dean’s list, graduation, and other student honors/awards.
  • Coordinate the College’s style guide and serve as the primary proofreader for the college’s print materials.
  • Track media placements and measure outcomes
  • Develop and maintain a database of media contacts
  • Manage relationships, as appropriate, with any outside media relations consultants
  • Lead on-campus media training when appropriate.
  • Serve on the content creation team for social media outlets Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and others.
  • Manage employee-l and community-l messages.
  • Edit and distribute Inside Gustavus, a weekly campus newsletter.
  • Serve as a member of the Gustavus emergency communications team, which must always have one or more members on call, immediately accessible, responsive, and prepared to issue timely alerts in the event of an emergency.
  • This is a weather essential position, which requires on-demand work requirements related to emergency weather related communication.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Marketing and Communication.

Prerequisites

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor's Degree with academic work that demonstrates a proven effectiveness as a writer and communicator across multiple platforms
  • 2-4 years of related experience in strategic communication, public relations, or journalism OR 2-4 years of related experience in higher education, preferably in a liberal arts setting
  • Strong writing and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a team

WORKING ENVIRONMENT: 

  • Occasional travel
  • Includes work on evenings and weekends
  • Ability to work on call
