JOB SUMMARY:  The Special Gift Officer for Heritage Scholarships will focus on securing 50 new current Heritage Scholarships per year, building new gifts to the endowment to support Heritage Scholarships and being the project manager for this four-year scholarship program. 

The Special Gift Officer’s responsibilities will also work on securing gifts to the College on a broad spectrum. This includes, but is not limited to: conducting telephone, direct mail and personal solicitations of prospective donors for annual gifts; researching prospective donors; coordinating donor cultivation; helping develop and produce cultivation, solicitation, and acknowledgment packages; supporting direct mail, phonathon, email, and internet marketing efforts; providing stewardship to present, and past donors; handling donor inquiries; among other duties as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Reports to the Director of the Gustavus Fund; works closely and collaboratively with the Gift Planning team, the Associate Vice President for Advancement, the Assistant Director of Donor Relations, and the Office of Financial Aid.    
  • Identify and conduct face-to-face solicitations of philanthropic support for Gustavus Adolphus College, focusing on Heritage Scholarships. 
  • Maintain quality contact records and efficient tracking of results.
  • Build and maintain exceptional relationships, recognizing the needs and sensitivity of our constituents.
  • Effective working both independently and collegially.
  • Draft correspondence and reports as requested.
  • Support the day-to-day operations of the Heritage Scholarship program through direct mail, phonathon, e-mail, and internet activities.
  • Promote and exercise teamwork and collaboration when working with donors, volunteer groups and coworkers.
  • Spends at least 60% of one's time in the field with prospective donors, half of which may be time spent traveling outside of the Twin Cities region; participates in the College’s prospect review process.
  • Maintains a portfolio of donors to the College.
  • Works with Gift Planning and Gustavus Fund staff to identify and move donors into the major gift pipeline.
  • Facilitates growth of affinity groups as needed.  
  • Coordinates through a donor-by-donor basis with individual Gift Planners to facilitate maximum reunion giving efforts and class success.  
  • Focus on priorities, meet deadlines, and achieve established fundraising goals.   
  • Works with colleagues to develop and implement successful marketing, education, recognition, sustainer and stewardship programs; participates in growing the membership of the College’s recognition societies.
  • Works closely and collaboratively with members of the entire Advancement staff.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Prerequisites

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required in related field.
  • Experience in development, fundraising, or related field such as sales or marketing.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficient computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • High level of initiative and resourcefulness being results-oriented.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • Experience in development and fundraising in a higher education institution or nonprofit organization.
  • Proven experience developing long term and strategic fundraising approaches.

Working Environment:

  • Must be able to work extended hours during the week and occasionally the weekend.
  • Travel required.
