JOB SUMMARY:  The primary purpose of this position is to maintain and improve safe and efficient electrical systems through proper upkeep and installation of wiring and related equipment in all college facilities and to support College functions through reconfiguration of facilities and augmentation of campus security activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Provides services as directed in a thorough and regular manner to insure the completion of assigned tasks and objectives.
    • Receives daily work orders from the Electric Shop Supervisor and follows verbal or written instructions provided which describe the timetable and minimum standards required to ensure that priorities and objectives are met.
  • Designs, constructs, installs and repairs building electrical and control systems and their components as required by the building maintenance program and according to the needs of various college departments.
    • Lays out and installs electrical equipment and wiring systems.
    • Installs conduit systems by bending, cutting, connecting, and securing conduit, fittings and boxes.
    • Installs and connects or splices wires properly in the conduit system.
    • All work must be accomplished in accordance with the National Electrical Code and be subject to state inspection.
  • Tests, services, maintains and repairs electrical apparatus including electronics equipment, computer gear, motors, lighting and power systems, air conditioning equipment and appliances.
  • Evaluates and recommends system improvements for energy conservation, reliability, longevity and other performance criteria.
  • Identifies and resolves problems and breakdowns in systems and equipment with and without use of prints and schematics.
  • Maintains a current Minnesota Class A Journeyman Electrician License.
  • Demonstrates an ability to remain current on changing job responsibilities and procedures in order to complete tasks at a continuing acceptable level of performance.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to expand technical abilities by attending training courses and seminars.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work environment according to OSHA standards in order to minimize safety hazards and accidents.
  • Assists other physical plant personnel as needed.
  • Interacts with college community in a friendly and cooperative manner which contributes to a positive working climate.
  • Provides occasional work direction for student employees and temporary personnel.
  • Provides support and oversight of outside contractors and service personnel.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Prerequisites

MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:  

  • High school degree or equivalent
  • One year journeyman electrician experience
  • Minnesota Class A Journeyman Electrician license
  • Graduate of vocational or technical school electrical program and three years electrical apprentice experience or four years electrical apprentice experience.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of microprocessors and programming
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment on an emergency back-up basis for snow removal and on an occasional basis for unloading freight.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:  

  • Exposure to outside weather conditions year-round
  • Regularly works with hazardous voltages
  • Works on ladders, scaffolds, roofs, and climbs poles, with a maximum height of up to 120 feet.
  • Lifting up to 75lbs, bending, twisting and kneeling. 
  • Regular work involves moderate to heavy physical effort
  • Operates hazardous equipment
  • Required to enter private areas such as student rooms and bathrooms.
  • 24 hour on call availability throughout the year
  • Overtime is necessary at various time of the year
  • Exposure to some hazardous substances such as PCB ballasts, asbestos insulation and cleaning solvents.
