Öyvind Fahlström - a Roman Artist

February 25

Lecture by Sharon Avery-Fahlström, The Öyvind Fahlström Foundation & Archives at Museu d'art contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), Spain.

The origins of the Brazilian-born Swedish artist Öyvind Fahlström's first major work, Opera, are Roman.  Fahlström was in classical studies at Stockholm University, fell in love with a fellow classicist, and went with her when she won a year's scholarship to The Swedish Institute for Classical Studies in Rome.

Sharon will share her case study of Öyvind Fahlström's Opera, which provides convincing evidence that Fahlström¹s later work (certainly his palette) was very much influenced by his time in Rome and Italy.  After this formal lecture (in a Q&A session) Sharon will talk more about Fahlström¹s legacy and the installations on display at the Hippie Modernism exhibition (closing Feb. 29th) at the Walker Art Museum.
