Vigil for the Transgender Day of Rememberance
On Wednesday, November 20th, at 7pm, The Office of the Chaplains and Queer & Allies will co-host a "Vigil for the Transgender Day of Remembrance", to take place in Christ Chapel.
The Transgender Day of Remembrance is set aside to memorialize those who have been killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held each year around the world, typically during the month of November, and began in the late 1990's after the murder of Rita Hester.
Our Vigil for the Transgender Day of Remembrance serves the following purposes: 1) It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgender people, an action that our current media does not perform. 2) It is an opportunity to mourn and honor the lives of those who might otherwise be forgotten. 3) Through the vigil, we express love and respect for those often on the receiving end of indifference and hatred. 4) It reminds non-transgender people that all human beings are deserving of dignity and respect, and 5) It gives allies a chance to step forward in solidarity alongside those often marginalized.
