Announcement: Upcoming Lecture: 'Commemoration and Conflict: The Confederate Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery' (Speaker: Dr. Bronwen Wikkiser)
Plan to attend this lecture at 7 - 8 p.m. on Monday, March 21 in Beck Hall Room 302. The year 2015 marked the sesquicentennial of the end of the U.S. Civil War, yet the wounds of this conflict continue to fester deeply, as demonstrated by recent debates about the Confederate flag and other symbols of the Confederacy. These debates often feature the motivations and intentions of the Confederate leadership, especially regarding the institution of slavery. In this talk Dr. Wickkiser revisits the Confederate Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery and its designer, Moses Jacob Ezekiel, to consider what the monument represented to Ezekiel, a Jew who fought for the Confederacy and spent the last decades of his life in Rome immersed in traditions of Greek and Roman art while advocating passionately for religious freedom.
