In order to provide the lavish lifestyle his wife Cecilia demands, Anzoletto agreed to rent a new large residence for the couple to settle in.  Written by Carlo Goldoni, the master of Italian comedy, the play begins just a few days after the wedding. However, the new house is not ready for the imminent move because Anzoletto cannot afford the rent, much less the sumptuous furnishings Cecilia expects in their new dwellings. While garrulous freeloaders and penniless nobles give useless advice on how to furnish the house, Anzoletto's sister, Meneghina, is mad at him for squandering her dowry and forbidding her to marry her beloved Lorenzino. Meanwhile the upstairs neighbors, two curious and gossipy sisters, observe and spy on the new residents only to discover they share more than physical proximity with them, thus unravelling a series of entanglements and eventually procuring the intervention that will save the day.
