The Legacy of Raoul WallenbergOctober 25, 2012 at 7–9 p.m.

This is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Raoul Wallenberg, one of Sweden's most important diplomats of the 20th century. He is credited with saving thousands from certain death at the hands of the Nazis in the winter of 1944/45 in Budapest, Hungary.

Ingemar Eliasson will speak on the lasting legacy of Raoul Wallenberg and the inspiration his heroism offers for future generations. Mr. Eliasson will also share the findings of the Commission of Inquiry he chaired in 2003. The Commission examined the role of the Swedish Government in the aftermath of Wallenberg's disappearance in January of '45 when he was arrested and taken by the Soviets.

Mr. Eliasson has enjoyed a remarkable career in Swedish government. He was a leader in parliament and served with distinction as the Governor of Varmland, his native Province. He recently retired as Marshall of the Realm, the highest position in the Royal Court, where he reported directly to the King.

The Wallenberg lecture, sponsored by the Peace Studies program, will take place at Gustavus on Thursday October 25th at 7pm. Mr. Eliasson will also speak at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis on Sunday, October 28 at 2 p.m.
