Description

The Gustavus Diversity Center and Office of Fine Arts present Ron McCurdy's "The Langston Hughes Project, Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz" at 7:30 p.m. on September 19 in Bjorling Recital Hall. McCurdy's work is a multimedia performance of jazz, poetry, and video on the life and legacy of Langston Hughes. The performance centers around Hughes' poem "Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz", which he wrote following the Newport Jazz Festival of 1960 where he shared the stage with many of the most influential artists of the time including Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, and Ray Charles.
