The Future of Farming: Kernza, the Revolutionary New Grain
A presentation by Ben Penner
Join us for our April Lunch and Learn with a presentation by Ben Penner, local farmer and Vice President of the Perennial Promise Growers Cooperative. Among other crops, Ben grows Kernza, a new perennial wheatgrass recently developed by the Land Institute. Now on the market as flour and grain, Kernza serves as a unique opportunity in sustainable agriculture. Not only would a perennial crop reduce the usage of fossil fuels, their deep roots show potential in carbon sequestration and soil development. As an early adopter, Ben will discuss his own experience farming Kernza near Saint Peter, as well as the opportunities and challenges he sees in bringing this new grain to its full potential. Attendees will be served a lunch that includes Ben’s Kernza flour.
