Going public: student contributions to Wikipedia

Our students seek quickly-accessible sources of information. It is critical that our students and the public have access to accurate and engaging sources on biological topics. Because of this need, and the fact that our students are comfortable using technology and interested in participating in a global community, we developed two projects requiring students to communicate topics related to plant or insect biology using Wikipedia. As a result of these projects, students realized how poorly some topics were covered, composed and posted new entries, and expressed pride in their final products " because they were in the public domain.
