Description

This seminar considers the story of the modern religious revitalization movement known as Mormonism. Beginning by considering the prophet Joseph Smith and the rise of this new religious tradition in the 1830s, the lecture will turn to its central contemporary manifestations in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (excluding for the moment its polygamous branches). What is the life plan for members of the LDS church? In what ways are "eternal families epart of today's lived reality among Mormons? How is the "lay epriesthood authority constituted and expressed? How do Mormons consider the issue of death transcendence? What issues face this church now as it expands globally?
