TimeOctober 19, 2016 at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Description

Presenter: Dr. John Lammert, Professor Emeritus of Biology, Gustavus Adolphus College

Human civilization is constantly challenged by infectious diseases that emerge seemingly without warning. These pestilences have had serious effects on human society. The Black Plague altered the social fabric of Europe. Tuberculosis and smallpox were once greatly feared and killed millions. The toll from present day's plagues is not so large but we still fear them. Until recently, mosquitos have been annoying biters, but now headlines of Zika virus instill a bit of fearfulness.

The conversation will focus on a few plagues of the past, on Zika virus and a few other mosquito-borne viruses and their public health implications, and on use of genetically-modified mosquitos to control spread of these viruses.
