Raoul Wallenberg Memorial LectureNovember 8, 2010 at 7–8 p.m.
"Not a simple story: Mass media and mass violence, the African case."
Dr. Jo Ellen Fair, Professor of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Fair's research addresses US media images of conflict in Africa as well as African media. She has done field research in multiple African nations, examining television culture in Senegal, and training Ghanaian journalists preparing to report on the nation's National Reconciliation Commission. Her work challenges the simple linkages made between hate media and violence in the Rwandan genocide, and the constraints and challenges faced by African journalists in post-conflict societies. In addition to multiple publications related to her work, she is the editor of African Issues and on the editorial board of several African Studies journals and communications journals.
