Description

Mark your calendar to the Fall 2009 Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Lecture, "Oath Betrayed: America's Torture Doctors" at 7:00 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2 in the Wallenberg Auditorium.

Dr. Steven H. Miles, M.D. of the University of Minnesota Medical School became an international figure when he spoke up about the complicity of medical professionals in the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. What surprised him most was that the doctors and nurses did not speak up about the abuse, but rather were co-opted into the process and became active participants. Dr. Miles will speak about his extensive investigation into physicians involved in torture, including sanctions against physicians for torture in countries as diverse as Greece and Uruguay.

Dr. Miles is Professor of Medicine and Bioethics. He is also an Affiliate Faculty for the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the U. of Minnesota. He has published four books and numerous articles on medical ethics, human rights, tropical medicine, and end of life and geriatric health care.

The lecture is sponsored by Peace Studies and is free and open to the public.
