Description

Dirk Lummerzheim, Research Professor Emeritus, Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska, will present Using the aurora for remote sensing of the upper atmosphere

The upper atmosphere is difficult to reach for in situ observations, but remote sensing using the naturally occurring light in aurora and airglow can give insight about the dynamics, chemistry, and composition of the thermosphere and ionosphere. This presentation will give a brief overview of the high latitude upper atmosphere, and how optical observations of aurora from the ground and from spacecraft have been used in
models to learn about the ionosphere and the aurora.
