Mexican Folkloric Journey: Leopoldo Novoa, composer, folklorist scholar and "marimbol" player, will talk about Contemporary Mexican Folkloric Music in relation to his life as a cultural producer and artist. Novoa, a Mexican-Colombian music composer, is one of the most important musicians and folklore specialists in Mexico. Besides his work as a folklorist, Novoa has composed music and choreography for more than 30 theatrical plays. In the past fifteen years Novoa has worked with the most prestigious Mexican choreographers and theatre directors. Novoa has received many awards. The most important are: the "Silvestre Revueltas" award for the best music for Mexican theatre in 1985, the Mexican National Best Choreography Music Award, in 1988 and in 1997, the State of Morelos Art Fellowship in 1993, National Art Fellowship for his opera "The dead and the talkative man" in 2000. Novoa is also the co-founder of the folkloric group CHUCHUMBÉ, which will present a concert/workshop on October 31 at Bjorling Hall.
