Kendall Lecture: Moin Syed PhD on Emerging AdulthoodApril 25, 2018 at 6–7:30 p.m.

Dr. Syed is a psychology professor at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, his research centers on multi-ethnic identity, emerging adulthood, and identity development.

Dr. Syed will be discussing his recent research on: Narratives and Identity Development: Capturing the Intersection of Self and Society:
Psychological research on identity development has tended to emphasize internal, intra-psychic processes. When social and cultural contexts are taken into account, they are largely conceptualized as external forces that have a top-down influence on identity. The master narrative framework is an alternative conceptualization of identity development that blurs the lines between self and society. This framework highlights how societal power, inequality, and opportunity can facilitate identity development for those in the majority youth and constrain it for in those who occupy marginalized positions in society. This presentation will include an overview of basic concepts and examples of recent empirical work using the framework.
