How can we involve more male students in academic experiential learning?March 10, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Gustavus Adolphus has been part of a unique national program funded by the Lilly Endowment to address the well documented imbalance of college men in study abroad, internships, service-learning, community service and other experiential learning opportunities. Fourteen different higher education institutions including Gustavus, Duke, Georgetown, Davidson, Morehouse, Siena, Augustana (Rock Island), Luther, Hastings, Saint John's, Hope, Wabash, Wagner and the University of Portland created pilot projects to identify best practices for enhancing the quantity and quality of men's engagement in experiential learning, as well as in vocational reflection, service, spiritual life, and leadership. The results, including two chapters about the Gustavus experience, have just been published in a new book from Men's Studies Press, Engaging College Men: Discovering What Works and Why. Please join special guests and Engaging College Men co-editors, Dr. Miles Groth (Wagner College) and Dr. Gar Kellom (Winona State University), for a presentation titled "Engaging College Men in Experiential Learning efollowed by conversation.

About the speakers: Dr. Gar Kellom is the lead member of a research and theory team established by the Lilly Endowment to address the issues of men's leadership, spiritual life, service, and vocation on college campuses. He was also a founder of the Center for Men's Leadership and Service at Saint John's University, which was a pilot program for a men's initiative of which Gustavus was one of the original fourteen members. Kellom is currently director if Student Support Services at Winona State University. Dr. Miles Groth is professor of psychology at Wagner College, Staten Island, New York. In 2007, he applied for a grant provided by the Lilly Endowment, administered by St. John's University, for implementing a project to study how to engage college men in campus life. This led to co-editing, with Dr. Kellom, Engaging College Men: Discovering What Works and Why.
