Description

The Offices of the Provost and Alumni Relations are pleased to partner and present a series for lifelong learners titled Gustavus Passion for Lifelong Learning.

Our first event is on Thursday, March 14 at the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis for an evening of poetry withJoyce Sutphen, professor of English at Gustavus. Dr. Sutphen has taught at Gustavus for 20 years and also serves as thepoet laureate for the State of Minnesota.

We live fast and busy lives; we can hold up a phone and find listings for the nearest restaurants or the names of the stars above us. How can poems"those little printed shapes on a page"matter? Robert Frost said that poetry is a "momentary stay against confusion, eand that sounds helpful for our times. Come and discover (or be reminded) how poetry can teach us to slow down and love the moments and particulars of the world.

Join us for a reception of wine, coffee and appetizers at 6:30 p.m. with presentation at 7:30 p.m. Registration is requested online. The cost is $10 per person. For more information, contact the Office of Alumni Relations at alumni@gustavus.edu or 800-487-8437.

The next event is November 19, 2013 and will feature Gustavus alumnus David Jones '83 presenting on the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination.
