Film Screening of "The Loving Story"February 26, 2013 at 6–7:30 p.m.
The Loving Story is a stunning and prize-winning documentary about the marriage of Richard and Mildred Loving, whose 1950s interracial marriage was illegal in Virginia, where they lived, and who with the help of two lawyers fought their case all the way to the United States Supreme Court. In the landmark case Loving v. Virginia (1967), the Court ruled state laws against interracial marriage unconstitutional. This film is at once informative, inspiring, humorous, bittersweet, and, given the issue of gay marriage today, timely. It includes extraordinary black and white 16 mm. footage of the Lovings, their children, and their lawyers shot by a filmmaker at the time and recently rediscovered. It has won numerous prizes, including the American Historical Association's 2012 John J. O'Connor Film Award. An informal discussion of the film led by Professors Greg Kaster and Kate Wittenstein of Gustavus's Department of History will follow.
