Synopsis: We will look at brief quotations on the purpose of education (very broadly conceived) from classical Asian traditions: Indian, Chinese, and Japanese asking whether, "these models of pedagogy, learning, teacher-student relations have any relevance to us today as teachers in a liberal arts tradition?" One benefit of looking at other cultural traditions is that it exposes our own, often not explicit, assumptions. And that is usually not a bad way to start a process of thinking and rethinking.
