Join us for a faculty conversation and lunch with Dr. Henry Emmons as we review the concept of resilience within the context of higher education, learn practical approaches to student development that can be adapted to your work as teachers and advisors, and discuss the integration of resilience development within student learning environments at Gustavus.

Resilience"the ability to bounce back from adversity or recover from difficulties"is imperative for success in today's society. Unfortunately, many college students struggle to build resilience. How can we cultivate resilient students?

Dr. Henry Emmons:Henry C. Emmons, MD, is a psychiatrist who integrates mind-body and natural therapies, mindfulness teachings, compassion, and insight into his clinical work. Emmons developed the Resilience Training Program, an integrative program proven to be helpful for depression. He practices with Partners in Resilience, where they offer Pathways to Joy, a program that integrates the best of movement, nutrition, natural therapies, and the psychology of mindfulness to help restore resilience and rediscover joy. In addition, Emmons is the author of The Chemistry of Joy, The Chemistry of Calm, and The Chemistry of Joy Workbook; the consulting psychiatrist for several colleges; and is currently working on a book using new neuroscience discoveries to promote healthy aging.
