This workshop is entitled "Scribbling and Healing: Creative Writing During Troubled Times" and will involve a discussion of artisitc responses to the recent crises.
Joanna Kadi is a writer, poet, musician, activist, and teacher. She is the author of Thinking Class: Sketches from a Cultural Worker, and the editor of Food For Our Grandmothers: Writings by Arab-American and Arab-CanadianFeminists, both published by South End Press. She has read from her work and given talks across the United States. Kadi has worked as a grassroots community organizer on a diverse range of issues, including Palestinian self-determination and ending violence against women. For many years, she taught classes in critical thinking for Minneapolis' Centre for Arts Criticism and the GLBT Programs Office at the University of Minnesota. As a musician, she plays derbeke (Arabic hand drum) and jembe (West African standing drum), as well as piano and fiddle. She has performed in numerous venues in the Twin Cities, ranging from Walker Art Center to Intermedia Arts to Patrick's Cabaret to Penumbra Theatre. Sponsored by: Women's Studies Program
