Classics Lecture: Ryan Platte (Washington University) "Mythic Marriage: The Prehistory of Greek Language and Poetry"October 27, 2011 at 7–8 p.m.

Professor Ryan Platte(Washington University) will be delivering a talk entitled "Mythic Marriage: the prehistory of Greek language and poetry." This talk will explore the relationship between the ancient Greek language and other ancient languages, such as Latin and Sanskrit, in the context of Homeric poetry. It will begin with an introduction to some of the science behind the study of ancient linguistics and will result in an alternative, cross-cultural interpretation of Odysseus and Penelope's reunion in Homer's 'Odyssey'.
